Dad was there recently. Hype they have HUGE ethnic and religious hang ups..near as crazy as any nutter you can find in your region or even more becuase they know how to act benign almost as well as we do. The Rohingyas ill advisedly gave them a pretext for the first 30 or so years of the oppression when they launched the mujahid party and went on to wage an insurgency. There were reasons for said insurgency but no one cared for the details..Burma was a military junta- opposition to their fight against the insurgents came due to their geopolitical concerns rather than anything else and certain countries supported them for the same reason..it became pat and parcel of the Burmese tapestry..so much so that today no one even thinks its out of the ordinary.
AND we, India, at least can't do anything about it. The Burmese let us build the Sitwe port and have given the go ahead for dredging the kaladan river..this provides us a transit route when taken in terms of bulk and economies of scale to be cheaper than even over land transit through BD. This project will only reach completion in the next decade..furthermore they have pushed out all ULFA rebels so far...some might still be hiding but it was enough to get ULFA to officially drop demands for secession and sit on the table this week. AND this is the group that runs 90% of the insurgency in the NE..WE OWE THEM. Obvio when I stated the above to @
BDforever he just didn't see the pragmatism, as ugly as it is, in the above statement.
Dad's prognosis was that more people would perish in the camps they are taking refuge in from just dysentery...ever seen a beach covered with excrement..that's where one of the camp is and that's the camps latrine too.
