BS. It happened in my state of Kerala where the communist government was ruling that time just like today. And we Keralities have a very progressive and secular approach to any one let alone Muslims. If you have doubts do check and you will find that the majority of affluent Muslim population live in Kerala.
But that doesn't mean any crime committed by anyone can't be undermined, irrespective of their religion.

Forming violent mobs on religious issues is common in both communities.
Both groups have killed for interfaith marriages.
Both groups have killed when they felt their faith was insulted.

This is a problem with the political parties- they use mob violence instead of legal measures against their problems. BJP does it openly. The Congress does it behind the scenes.
Anyhow, this is declining in the prosperous and educated regions.
