Japanese publisher Shueisha Inc. said Naruto, a popular comic series that appears in the weekly Shonen Jump magazine, will end in November after a 15-year run.
The story of Uzumaki Naruto and his struggles to become a leading ninja first appeared in Jump in 1999. Chapters of Naruto, written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto, have been collected into 70 volumes of comic books with the 71st set to go on sale next month.
More than 130 million copies of the comic books have been printed in Japan and an additional 75 million overseas, according to the company. The series is available in more than 35 countries and regions, a Shueisha spokeswoman said.
The final episode of Naruto will appear in the Jump magazine that goes on sale Nov. 10. A new feature film is set to open in theaters in Japan in December and an exhibition of its artwork will take place next year. Naruto has also been turned into an animated series on television.
The publisher didn’t give a reason for ending the series, but Mr. Kishimoto said in a June 2012 interview with the Asahi Shimbun that the story was reaching its climax.
