Prime Minister Narendra Modi is launching a nationwide online programme to check whether people are using toilets as part of his cleanliness drive. From next month, officials will head out with mobile phones, tablets and iPads to report on whether toilets are being used in rural India, with results uploaded onto a website in real time.

India's shortage of toilets costs the country more than $50 billion a year, mostly through premature deaths and hygiene-related diseases, according to a World Bank study. India suffers a greater cost than other Asian countries from the poor collection of human excreta, the study found.

About 626 million Indians defecate in the open compared with 14 million in China, the World Health Organization said in a 2012 report. Since taking office in May, Modi has repeatedly lamented the poor state of sanitation and public cleanliness in India, vowing to solve the problems within the next five years.

The government has doubled spending on a toilet building programme and requested financial donations from some of the country's largest companies to help.

"Earlier, the monitoring was done only about the construction of toilets, but now the actual use of toilets will be ascertained," the government said in a statement on Wednesday. In October, Modi annoyed government officials by ordering them to come to work to clean toilets on a national holiday.

Medical bills, since most people who die from lack of sanitation are poor, they can't afford full/proper treatment so the government has to cover their bills. Not to mentions virus and other diseases that spread because of lack of sanitation facilities.

in all socialist societies, medical system is free... the "world bank" doesn't want to highlight this, it wants to project money as being a necessary component of society that is more important than "inefficient illness".

why doesn't "world bank" speak of tens of billions of dollars spent every year by western bloc nations ( incl. india ) on weapons... surely, that money ( if only money was ever required ) could have constructed a nice bathroom/toilet for every house... surely, that money could have constructed a proper hospital in every locality.

Geographical size is not a matter .It is about demography.

1. no one forced india to have the largest national population in history - 1.25+ billion ( 125+ crore ), out of which 900 million are males... it is india's fault.

2. no one can deny the extreme difficulties of establishing utilities in the soviet union in all its coverage from east to west... it is not about population but about determination and intelligence.

3. we better not compare cultural crimes in india against what was in the soviet socialist republic.

I know people who traveled there during the 70s and how desperate for small things like chewing gum and candy the kids would be, empty shops with nothing to buy.. come back some years later, same desperate kids looking for candy, same empty shops, oh.. but 0 inflation, the plates and saucers cost the same

communism is shit, nobody wants communism, Russia itself has no wish to go back to such a failed system
