Centre has given the nod to setup Counter Insurgency and Anti Terrorism Schools (CIATS) in Nagaland and nine other states in the country.
Informing this, union minister of sate for Home Affairs Jitendra Singh told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply, Wednesday that the government of India has approved 21 Counter Insurgency and Anti Terrorism Schools in the Eleventh Five Year Plan Period in Nagaland, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Orissa, West Bengal, Manipur and Tripura.
Presently, 17 CIAT schools are functional in various states where several training courses are running for police personnel, he said adding about 18389 police personnel have been trained till April, 2012 in these schools.
Earlier, home minister P. Chidambaram in his MHA Report Card for April said amounts of Rs.1.31 crore, Rs.71.35 lakh, Rs.30 lakh and Rs.23.50 lakh were released to the governments of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha and Bihar, respectively for upgrading the existing Counter Insurgency & Anti Terrorist Schools (CIATS) and for payment of trainers fees.
It maybe noted that in 2010 Centre had release released Rs. 22.50 crore for establishment of Counter Insurgency and Anti-terrorism Schools (CIATS) in Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Orissa.
Centre has been closely monitoring the situation and supplements and coordinates their efforts in several ways by providing-- Central Armed Police Forces and Commando Battalions for Resolute Action; sanction of India Reserve (IR) battalions, setting up of CIAT schools; modernisation and upgradation of the state police and their Intelligence apparatus under MSPF scheme etc.
