N-assets: Pakistan cautions against any misadventure
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Friday announced foolproof security and control over its nuclear assets and cautioned against those contemplating any misadventure.
This strong resolve came at a meeting of the National Command Authority (NCA) held in Rawalpindi with President Pervez Musharraf in the chair. Caretaker Prime Minister Muhammadmian Soomro, Chairman Joint Chief of Staff Committee General Tariq Majid, the services chiefs and senior military officers and scientists attended the meeting.
NCA is the highest forum to ensure tight control and safety of nuclear arsenal. The meeting took note of the hostile campaign in a section of the international media with regard to Pakistan's nuclear assets.
President Pervez Musharraf reiterated that the security of nuclear assets was "foolproof". The meeting advised against creating irresponsible alarm. The NCA said Pakistan was capable of defending its interests and cautioned against those contemplating misadventures.
The president had promulgated an ordinance on the formation and aims and objectives of the NCA the other day. The NCA would be headed by him with the prime minister to be the vice chairman of the authority. President Musharraf put the NCA on firm legal footing before lifting the emergency and holding elections in early January.
Pakistan conducted nuclear tests as tit-for-tat to India's on May 28, 1998 but the NCA was first established in 2000. The Western media has gone an extra mile in discussing and spreading rumours about Pakistan's nuclear assets in a bid to kick the dust, though it has never raised such concerns about Israeli and Indian nuclear programmes.
"Pakistan is capable of defending its interests and cautions those contemplating misadventures," said an official statement on the NCA meeting. The NCA reviewed the development of various projects related to Pakistan's strategic capability and expressed its satisfaction over the pace of development. It also approved a number of proposals for strengthening the deterrence capability of the country.
The NCA is mandated to have complete command and control over research, development, production and use of nuclear and space technologies and to ensure security and safety of nuclear establishments and nuclear materials.
