Myth of Indian overpopulation

However i made an interesting observation from that list

According to that list top two countries are

> Singapore
> Hong kong

Now consider this

Land Area---- Population

Singapore--- 716 Km2----- 44 Lakhs (2005 est)

Mumbai----- 603 Km2---- 1.2 Crore (2011 est)

Land Area------ Population

Hong Kong----- 1104 Km2----- 68 Lakhs (2005 est)

Delh-----i 1484 Km2------ 1.1 Crore (2011 est)

Singapore and hong kong are basically city countries and they must be compared to our metros in fact our cities like mumbai , delhi , bangalore should study their model and try to adapt them on how to provide world class infrastructure and manage things efficiently despite having such a huge population. We all know singapore on any day would beat mumbai by a huge margin.

this is going by population density to arable land o_O

India IS overpopulated, no doubt. When a country's people cannot get enough resources from the land, the country is overpopulated. You need to ride a Mumbai local before you pass that judgement.;)

Yea. At the most basic level arable land is the constraint on a population. That is to say, overpopulation is crossing over a carrying capacity threshold imposed by how much food an area can produce.

That only proves Mumbai is overcrowded

You take a long train ride...and for the most part of the journey..you just see wilderness and not a soul in sight...astonishing, when one would presume that we are overpopulated.

They only hear 1 billion and malnourished rate. 1 billion is perfectly sustainable for India, a country that has always had 300 million back before modern agriculture. Malnourishment rates are due to poor distribution, something like 30% of food is spoiled while waiting, nevermind how the land isn't mechanized yet.

Logistics and cold storage facilities are pathetic..having said that, Indians haven't gotten around to getting used to or trusting packaged foods..so even if there is considerable increase in cold storage facilities..sales of packaged foods won't be..

We don't need to package them just cold storage and proper logistic. GST reforms are going to have a major benefit to logistics. Instead of 1/2 the trip being spent at state checkpoints, the travel will be seamless. That with cold storage of perishables will solve malnutrition.

Since population growth is not much now, all we need is to spread the population by building new cities and infrastructure.

I did a survey as a college project a couple of years back...Our storage capacity sucks bad..indirect reason for this paucity was a lack of demand for stored food, People preferred fresh stuff rather than processed packaged and stored food items. Whatever storage capacity available is used for storing seasonable items that's used for manufacturing juices, ketchup...stuff like that.

Is there any plans to increase our storage? I have to admit I'm put off by packaged food too. Why can't they cold store food at a regional distributor and then ship to stores and road side kiosks when needed?

What's stopping big investments in cold storage facilities is lack of demand for stored food items..Small grocers and consumers prefer to buy fresh from daily markets rather than go and pick up packaged stuff from supermarkets...it's a ecosystem that depends on suppliers, logistics, supermarket chains, economy and reach.

I guess 30% of food is going to continue to rot cause of packagephobia by Indians
