Myanmar looks to buy Chinese SY-400 ballistic missile systems

Shouldn't get dragged into a race
our defence procurement is not related to any country. bro
Myanmar is not enemy of Bangladesh and we have no reason to be hostile. There is no border dispute either at land or sea.Rohingya problem is a minor one and there is no chance of clash between two countries for this problem.Afterall, there are only 1 million Rohingya in Burma in a country of 55 million people.Once Rohingya get citizenship of Myanmar,Bangladesh and Myanmar will brcome best friend.

There is no arm race between Myanmar and Bangladesh. Our defence procurement is not against Myanmar or any specific country. We will not engage any fancy, stupid, laughable so called 'arm race' with Myanmar
yes. agreed. same here.
Myanmar going to target kokang. China should not sell this to them.
no need to use this system..

Indians are cheerleading here but this will trigger a dangerous arms race in the region which could lead to something huge and the biggest loser would be India.

With this SRBM, Myanmar could hit almost all our major cities including Dhaka and Chittagong. To deter it, we will need to have the capability to hit as far as Yangon, close to a range of 1000km, which will require us to develop an indigenous missile program. In the long run, Myanmar couldn't cope up with the arms race against us due to the huge difference between the economies of the two countries. Eventually, all our deterrence would be targeted towards India.

I understand the concern but please note that SY-400 is not SRBM, PLA terms such weapon systems as "Guided Rocket" not "Ballistic Missile". More importantly, SY-400 is an export code, range will be below 300km, warhead below 500 kg (these are MTRC export limits, China though not a signatory still self-restrict accordingly).

But according to the article, it is effectively an SRBM but labeled as MRLS to escape the export limit.

China is not a signatory of MTCR so there's no external limit anyway, but as a practice China does self-restrict. The range of 400 km quoted is for WS2 that's PLA only, not export version SY400 which will be limited to below 300 km, my estimate is 180~200 km. Don't worry, it's a tactical weapon system, very unlikely for deep strike.

To be honest, I'm still not convinced. And even with a range of 200km they could hit Chittagong.

Can they strike Chittagong from behind border with 200 km range rockets? I'm not sure, but there are a lot of China vested interests in Chittagong, this shouldn't happen.

There are indeed, let's wait and see how it goes.

The range of SY400 has been equal with latest Brahmos, it may cause arm race in the region. The weapon is just too powerful to be sold.

We have heck lot of investment in Chittagong, i think Myanmar won't dare to attack it. This weapon is too good for dealing menace like terrorists and rebellions. Kind of a strategic deference.

but you are selling :butcher:
I personally against the selling, I don't know what the government has in mind. A rocket system with 400KM, it even can hit deep into India.@Aung Zaya do you have problem with Thailand?

And I knew Myanmar also has border conflict with India in the area of Manipur. So maybe you know :D

Another gesture to contain India as it has long zigzag land connection border with Myanmar.

Unlike BD and India, Myanmar and India doesn't have a well defined clear border in some of the area. Time to take advantage of.......

@Aung Zaya kindly resolve the Rohinyas issue, and bring peace back to BD and Myanmar. You don't want to disturb China's long term strategic setup , aren't you?

I think India will have problem if BD induct SY400?:partay::cheers:.

India & Myanmar do not have any border dispute. Both countries have already completed and agreed on the results of the joint survey conducted back in 2003.

The issue is only about handling the sensitivities of people who live along the borders who have relations & families on both sides of the border apart from terrorists on who both sides of the border taking advantage of the porous 1000 mile long border between the two countries.

Yes, they had border conflict in Manipur. It's the fact.

As I said in my earlier post, there is no border issue between India and Myanmar.

The joint survey was completed and agreed upon back in 2003.

What you may have heard is related to terrorists on both sides of the border.

The rebels of Myanmar running away into India while rebels of India running away into Myanmar.

Myanmar and India already have an agreement and joint task force to deal with the rebels that are inimical to the interests of either of the countries.

There is no outstanding dispute or disagreement between India and Myanmar.
