In recent years, Myanmar has emerged as a top producer of the contraband drug, much of which is smuggled into Bangladesh.
The senior monk, who has been named only as 'Arsara', was arrested after police found 400,000 tablets in his car as he was driving to Maungdaw in the state of Rakhine, the report said.
Following his arrest, a second batch of 4 million tablets was found hidden in a monastery.
Local media 'The Irrawaddy' reported that Arsara is well known among the Buddhist community in Maungdaw town of the Muslim-majority northern Rakhine.

Myanmar is infamous for producing yaba, opium and cannabis in vast quantities.
Drug trafficking has emerged as a problem in Rakhine State and illicit drug trade has flourished because of its mountainous land and porous borders.
The Irrawaddy reported that a police crackdown in Maungdaw town, which is separated from Bangladesh by the Naf River in Cox's Bazar, led to the haul of 15 million amphetamine tablets in September last year.
The BBC reported that the latest consignment seized from the monastery is worth almost $9.2 million.
