In a significant development, Myanmar has agreed to allow the Indian Army to cross the international border into its territory in hot pursuit of insurgents but set the precondition that Myanmarese citizens should not be harmed.
Disclosing that Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, the current commander-in-chief of the Myanmar Army, had a meeting with Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday at which national security adviser Ajit Doval and Joint Intelligence Committee chairman R.N. Ravi were also present, authoritative security sources told this newspaper that Myanmar has also agreed to deploy additional troops along the border with India to strengthen border security.
Indicating that the development was significant, security sources said Myanmar has assured it will help India drive out anti-India forces from Myanmarese territory.
This development is also seen as a major breakthrough in view of recent attacks on Indian security forces in the Northeast and the cross-border raid conducted by Indian Special Forces on camps run by the Khaplang faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-K) and other Northeast insurgent groups.
Informing that the Myanmar Army Chief also met Indian Army Chief Gen. Dalbir Singh Suhag, security sources said the Indian Army has agreed to facilitate training of Myanmar Army officers in India.
Pointing out that Senior General Min Aung Hlaing was briefed about the ongoing activities of Indian insurgent groups inside their territory, security sources said the Indian security establishment also shared crucial intelligence inputs about the activities of Indian insurgent groups in Myanmar.
Senior General Min Aung Hlaing was scheduled to meet the defence secretary, security sources said, adding that he is also scheduled to hold a meeting at the headquarters of the Indian Army’s 3 Corps at Rangapahar, in Dimapur, after visiting Bodh Gaya.
