Even 40% of the brahmans in UP-BIHAR are poor and they are only 4-5 % of the Indian population unlike Muslim's who are 14%.Mayawati promised reservation for swaran castes this time in elections.

I do not think India uses its reservations the way it should, I will expand my point in the morning.

There is a need to reform the reservations. There is no need to remove all caste and religion right away but the reservation framework of 67 years definitely needs a relook and transition into an economy based reservation with parallel economic assistance programs for bpl demographics.

One of major places where India needs to look at is reservation in government sectors jobs. Reservations in government jobs, especially in technology based PSU sectors and central/state administration has led to is degradation of meritocracy and sub standard human resource pool.

Another are is reform in public and private education, upto secondary education, entire schools across the private and public foray needs to be completely subsidized by the government. Higher education needs complete eradication of any reservation.

Well many Indian Muslims are poor so his statement makes sense.

I am not against reservation,the problem is people who dont need it get it and the people who are really in need dont get it.

A ministers son will get reservation if he is from one of these groups,but the point is does he need it,that can be given to some other who needs it.other wise the cycle will continue,next his children will get reservation,when will the other people benifit from it in the group.
I used minister just for an example,it could be anyone who has done well in life.

Devyani Khobragade- Father is IAS, still used reservation to become a doctor first and then IFS officer.

People like Devyani are biggest reasons poor people from her caste are still backward even after 67 years of indepedance.

Caste based reservation was agreed between Gandhi and Ambedkar under Poona Pact of 1932 in which Ambedkar had agreed to drop the demand of separate electorate for Dalits. Reservation was given to them more for their social upliftment and less for their economic upliftment. Economically poor people can be given economic assistance and not reservation.

Yes I don't know how things are in rural India but there is no doubt that rich folks don't qualify for reservation by any stretch of imagination.

I come from a village in UP and I have seen and felt the horrid conditions of Dalits. They are still looked down upon. From my childhood i have seen only one change that they are no longer treated as untouchables and they dont die of hunger but they are still outcaste. Look at jitan Manjhi, the CM of Bihar, who visited a temple and later it was cleaned with ganga water. Since he is CM it became a news but even when an upper caste hindu Police Inspector of a Thana, takes charge from a dalit incumbent, he also does the same to his office by cleaning with holy water and performing some pooja. Can you sense the underlying discrimination and hatred? If a Dalit CM is treated like that what will be happening to others? His children may not need reservation from economic point of view but from social perspective they definitely need constitutional intervention.
I personally support all constitutional privileges to the people of dalit community and tribals and they dont belong to my religion. For the rest its debatable.

You must know the basis of reservation given to dalits. Its purely social basis not economical. Their economic backwardness is only a by product of their social exploitation. Reservation is given to them to instil self-respect in them and make them feel like humans and be part of the mainstream society. After 67 years of freedom, there are still incidences of their ihuman treatment by the so-called civilized people and they are still not into mainstream.
Majority of India is rural and atrocities are more in rural areas but not limited to villages only. I just gave an example of Bihar CM jitan Manjhi and find out if being rich or being powerful has changed his status.

Dalits account for about 25% of Indian population but they do not even have 2.5% resources of the nation. Illiteracy, malnutrition, infant mortality, poverty, exploitation are highest in this community. If one thing that really makes me ashamed of my country is the condition of dalits. Muslims are poor too and they also are discriminated but not like them. If any reform is needed of this 67 year old framework that is to expedite the process of their upliftment.

Their was a Judgment delivered by Andhra Pradesh High Court declaring 4.5% sub-quota for the Muslims within 27% quota for the OBCs as unconstitutional.the Central Government appealed for a stay of Andhra Pradesh High Court’s judgement. After hearing the matter argued by the Attorney General of India, Mr. Ghulam M. Vahanvati, the Hon’ble Supreme Court declined to stay Andhra Pradesh High Court’s judgement and indeed made indicting comments on the Government that there is no rationale and justification for 4.5% sub-reservation for the Muslims within the 27% quota for the OBCs.

Let's say if a upper caste hindu coverts to islam will he have reservation ? does he deserve it ? does it make a mockery of basis of the need of reservation ?
