New Delhi: India’s largest religious minority – which accounts for about 15% of the nation’s population – is just 3% in the Army. But when it comes to martyrdom, the Army jawans from the community double the percentage. In 2010, as many as 187 armymen laid their life while protecting the nation – more than 6% of them were Muslims.

According to the figures provided by the Army, the nation lost 15 Officers, 13 Junior Commissioned Officers and 159 men during 2010 in various operations – 12 of the martyrs were Muslims, that is 6.41%. Another interesting point is that 10 of 12 were in the infantry unit of the Army.

“Today as we complete 62 years of ‘Army Day’ (on 14th Jan) it gives me great pleasure to be amongst you all. My best wishes for a Happy New Year to all of you and through you to all our countrymen, to tell them that we rededicate and renew our pledge as the Army of this great Nation, to uphold our secular and democratic values as also our resolve to ensure the integrity and safety of our great Nation,” said General VK Singh, Chief of Army Staff in his address to the Army on 14th January.

However, in all these 62 years since Independence, there has been but secularism when it came to recruitment in the armed forces. But whenever the question of low presence of Muslims in the Army is raised the move is seen anti-national and divisive.

Some years ago, late scholar Dr Omar Khalidi had raised the question more emphatically than anyone when he came up with his well-researched and documented historic book Khaki and Ethnic Violence. The book talked about headcount in the Army, and thus led to heated debate in Parliament.

Inspired with the work when five years back Justice Rajinder Sachar Committee panel, during its deliberations and study on marginalization of the Muslim community in the society, hinted that there should be a headcount in the Army and number of Muslims in the armed forces could be counted, the panel was opposed against the proposed headcount on basis of religion.

There is no official report on community-wise strength of Army. However, the strength of Muslims is roughly counted around 3%. The proportion is too low. This figures out as out of a Muslim population of nearly 150 million (15 crore), barely 29,000 Muslims are in the million-strong Indian Army. The figure will further go down if the number of Muslims serving in J&K infantry that has over 50% Muslims is excluded.

However, in the last few years, there has been move from the Central government to recruit more minority members in the armed forces.

Interesting comment from one of the reader:
Food for thought

the article is def. interesting but the subsequent politics of the subcontinent hinge on the defining moment of 1947 (ie- Partition). Maybe the impending break-up of Pakistan will lead to better conditions for Indian Muslims!!!

God works in mysterious ways..

So breakup of Pakistan is seen as betterment for India, a view long held by Pakistan. A failed, terrorize and weak Pakistan give India the impetus to troll about reversing 1947. And the cunning political brass has been active at this even if it means ignoring or hiding millions of their destitute poor.

. . . .
What is the Author trying to achieve here???? Being a senior.
Taking a statstic which is not even accurate, and U have put to discussion.

.
on one side we talk abt ill effects of extremism and "religionism" in both india and pak on the other side we debate such "issueless" topics.

a martyr is a martyr irrespective of class creed or ethnicity. wake up guys. please.

.
thats why every muslim should not necessary be a pro PAK army but a pro Jihadi :) :)

an average hindu (by faith) or an average musim (by faith) has his mentality plugged to the matrix of honor and normality architected by goverments and society rather then God or religion.

.
Jhanda chaye kisi ka bhi ho Hindu ,muslim ,sikh ,isayi par danda to bharat ka hai.... Now can we turned the tables and ask some of our neighbours about their minorities!!how many of them atleast recruited in respective of their %population??

.
Errr! Lame attempt!

And btw most of these martyrs have died in clashes with pakistan? So does that mean muslims killed their fellow muslims more than kafirs (non muslim hindu, sikh, christians?) Just little something to think about. :P :)

keep the word kafir to relate only hinduism, christians are are people of the book, their prophets are our(islam) prophets, and our prophets are theirs and most of all it is a monotheistic religion not a polytheistic religion

So how many Hindus/Christians/Ahmedis/Sikhs in Pakistan defense forces then? :pakistan:

According to Wikipedia
Harcharan Singh became the first Sikh to join the Pakistan army. For the first time in the 58 year history of Pakistan there has a Sikh been selected into Pakistan's army. Prior to Harcharan Singh's selection in the Pakistani army no individual person who was a member of the Hindu or the Sikh community were ever enrolled in the army

So thats close to zilch representation in the Pakistan army when Hindus and Sikhs make up about 3% of Pakistani Population. I don't really trust Wikipedia as a source but if any Pakistani member has information regarding this , care to share please? However if the Wiki info is true, i think Pakistani members should get off our case, 3% is still better than 0% anyday

@somebozo : Ever hear about our hero Abdul_Hamid

At 0800 hours on 10 September 1965 Pakistan forces launched an attack with a regiment of Patton tanks on a vital area ahead of village Cheema on the Bhikkiwind road in the Khem Karam Sector. Intense artillery shelling preceded the attack. The enemy tanks penetrated the forward position by 0900 hours. Realising the grave situation, Company Quarter Master Havildar Abdul Hamid who was commander of an RCL gun detachment moved out to a flanking position with his gun mounted on a jeep, under intense enemy shelling and tank fire. Taking an advantageous position, he knocked out the leading enemy tank and then swiftly changing his position, he sent another tank up in flames. By this time the enemy tanks in the area spotted him and brought his jeep under concentrated machine-gun and high explosive fire. Undeterred, Company Quarter Master Havildar Abdul Hamid kept on firing on yet another enemy tank with his recoilless gun. While doing so, he was mortally wounded by an enemy high explosive shell.

Havildar Abdul Hamid’s brave action inspired his comrades to put up a gallant fight and to beat back the heavy tank assault by the enemy. His complete disregard for his personal safety during the operation and his sustained acts of bravery in the face of constant enemy fire were a shining example not only to his unit but also to the whole division and were in the highest traditions of the Indian Army
