As violence and crime continue to surge the world over, the dilemma of witnessing violence or aggression and knowing whether to intervene has become equally common.

While witnessing a violent incident, many aspects are bound to race through a witness’s mind: should one risk his own safety, the authenticity of the incident and the possible negative consequences of intervention.

An inspiring story of what a London mosque did for the homeless on Christmas

A survey was conducted to determine how willing people are to intervene in an “extreme situation”, and the survey reaped some interesting results.

The survey titled ‘Bystander Backlash’ questioned 2,000 people and found that a greater percentage of people who identify as Muslims and Hindus said they would take action as opposed to those who identified as Christians.

Only 24 per cent of people said they would take their phones out to capture an incident if they saw a police officer harass an African American, while 21 per cent said they would simply ignore it. A more startling figure showed that nearly twice as many people said they would step in if they saw violence against a dog.

“Witnessing a social injustice in public invokes some kind of fight or flight response in all of us,” company spokesperson Stacia Mullaney said.

“These are immediate, in-the-moment reactions that we wanted to put hard numbers on. We wondered how we might react if we witnessed social injustice or an extreme situation,” she added.

While the firm conducting the survey stressed that it was not aware whether religion played a part in influencing a person’s decision making, Mullaney said other factors too appeared to play a role.

“We found that gender also played a role in how a person responded. Women were slightly more likely to passively monitor a situation, much more likely to call for help, and somewhat less likely to step in,” she said.

“Political affiliation also played a small role. Republicans are about four per cent more likely to call for help, while Democrats were slightly more likely to passively monitor (31%) the situation or provide comfort (6%).”

Interestingly Hindus and Muslims also have the highest "do nothing" segment

Hindus have a long memory of remembering that No good Deed goes unpunished.

its remarkable that despite that history, hindus step up to help others.

.
Looks idiotic and stupid. Now giving humanism the tag of religion? Next what? I wonder which idiots select these kinda topics as surveys
, true next they will start a survey saying whose help was accepted.

holds good in subcontinent reason is ppl dont want to get tangled with govt like accident cases. If you look at the fact that its poor who tend to help each other to survive.

.
Look at the rape incidents in India. In reality they don't "step in", they "step away" and enjoy the show. (They even sell rape videos!!)

reported for off topic.
guys neglect this idiot.

On more than one occasion. Have seen poor help others without any expectations in return. Hats off. Learnt a lot during Chennai floods of 2015. One occasion where more volunteers were available without expecting any help from govt agencies.

This statement is so stupid :hitwall:
Who asks a religion of a person before helping . Its a duty of people to help those needy .

it is more idiotic to read with eyes closed. the survey was not conducted on religious lines plz read carefully. in fact the results showed the ratio of those who tend to help belong to two particular religions.

What's the purpose of knowing the "religion" of those who help "me" or "you"? Why it is even needed? Does the survey intend to say, next time during distress in the middle of the street ask help someone with a beard or someone with ash on his forehead to have maximum chances for help?
Most importantly people who help others have a character which is polished by the way their parents bring them up. If a parent raises a kid by telling not to help others, he/she wont help others irrespective of its religion. All religions ask their followers to help others in time of need. So I cant accept this survey of giving religion to it

i think personally they did not intend to target religion and i believe the way more Muslims and Hindus turned up as those who go for helping victims as compared to Christians also indicate geographical behaviour. i mean look at the survey's origin and location. it indicates people from less developed or developing and those of developed world or countries show different behaviours. obviously it seems the Christians in this case are from more materialistic world. while in case of Muslims amd Hindus , we are still emotional people hence love to help the victims.

I am a Hindu. But still for some reason I find this thread obnoxious.

However your highlighted part is so true. Even in India City folks think twice before helping. Rural folks think after help is done.

. .
Its obnoxius to say the least. People bring religions into so called 'surveys' to score a point. Who the hell does such surveys based on religion.

A person's helping nature is based entirely upon his upbringing or the fact whether he was born in a city or rural area. City folk dont care about anyone. They are almost always in a hurry.

Hindus are one of the most welcoming and helping people. I can say it based on my first hand experience.

This thing varies person to person, nothing to do with religion. Religion only comes into play if that thing has to do with religion in first place.
