Burqa or all other face coverings is cultural requirement not Islamic.
What would make something '-ic' ?
When a word ends with the letters 'ic', it means the word, an adjective, is
DIRECTLY associated with certain meaning and context. It is not inferred, and the reader does not have to exercise any mental gymnastics to find that association.
Same with the letters 'ism'. What is 'capitalism' ? It is the practices that are directly associated with the ideas of making money and profits. It gets more complex but am sure you are intelligent enough to know what I mean.
Same with the letters 'ish'. If I say I will meet with you at the cafe at 'noon-ish', I am saying our meeting will be around noon, or 12 PM. Not 1 or 2 PM. But while not exactly 12 PM, our meeting would be approximately at that time.
It does not matter if the burqa did not have an Islam-ic or Muslim-ish origin, meaning the Prophet did not directly ordered Muslim women to cover up as that idea came from God Himself. If a people, usually involves culture, believes that a non-original or non-native practice is desirable for themselves and adopt it as a social norm, then it is safe to attach the 'ic' or 'ish' to that practice. Foreigners did not do this. Natives, meaning the people associated to a culture, did this.
Next is the issue of scope. If only a few Americans celebrate the Day of the Dead...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_of_the_Dead
Then the time span of Oct 31 to Nov 2 cannot be associated to Americans. So far, only Mexicans hold those few days culturally significant.
What is Dec 25th in terms of religious significance ?
http://www.biblicalarchaeology.org/...w-testament/how-december-25-became-christmas/
The most loudly touted theory about the origins of the Christmas date(s) is that it was borrowed from pagan celebrations.
Despite its popularity today, this theory of Christmas’s origins has its problems. It is not found in any ancient Christian writings, for one thing.
Whether the cultural significance of that date was of pagan origin before it became a Christian (religious) artifact is irrelevant. A people, and their culture, made that date emotionally and psychologically important, first personally, then spread throughout the culture. Maybe the ancient Christians did not want that date to be tainted with a pagan past, so they said nothing about it in their recorded history.
But to modern day Christians: Who cares ?
The point regarding scope is that the Day of the Dead failed to take by the majority of Americans, so that day remains a Mexican artifact, while for the Christians, from early days of that religion to today, the religious celebration of the Dec 25th gained and gained significance as time passed that the date Dec 25th became a Christian artifact. Ask any well traveled and/or well read person on what is Dec 25th and note the intelligence in the answer.
Enough Muslims
TODAY believes the burqa, and its variants, to be religiously and culturally significant that punishments for violations ranged from deeply personal distress to legal expressions, the Saudi 'moral police', that this mode of dress became
SUFFICIENTLY Islam-ic. That is scope, or range, or scale. Whatever word you need to describe it.
So to many modern day Muslims: Who cares if the burqa have a non-Islam origin ?
Or: I do not care if the burqa have a non-Islam origin, I am going to enforce it on our women anyway.
What is 'proscription' ?
noun
- the action of forbidding something; banning.
What is 'prescription' ?
noun
- an instruction written by a medical practitioner that authorizes a patient to be provided a medicine or treatment.
"he scribbled a prescription for tranquilizers"
synonyms: instruction, authorization;
- a recommendation that is authoritatively put forward.
Did Muhammad prescribed (recommend) or proscribed (forbid) the burqa ? If not, then his followers are free to adopt anything they want if they feel that such a thing and/or such an act will help them to preserve and sustain their faith.
The defense, and criticisms leveled at non-Muslims for our ignorance, that the burqa is not Islami-ic is wrong and ignorant in itself.
