it was a nice gesture, but given how a lot of Hindus are voracious consumers of meat themselves, I'm not sure about the civilizational values/roots bit.

The sacrificial meat is supposed to be handed to poor and relatives. Many of whom can't afford to eat meat on a regular basis. To you giving fresh meat to friends and relatives is a bad thing too? Think about that next time you gobble down a KFC.

Explaining their existence does not mean they serve any purpose. Gut bacteria exist even without the appendix.
