This year we only sponsored a goat in Mumbai as my husband is travelling. We have been sacrificing only goats since the time I remember and I have never seen anyone sacrificing beef animal on Bakrid. I know the context of your asking me this question but people in Pakistan forget that majority of hindus are non vegetarians. On Eids more than 50% of our guests are hindus who will never miss an invitation for non-veg food at a muslim's house.

In Mumbai on the days of major Jain festivals the butcher shops are closed and you will be surprized to know as to who opposed this closure and also violated it by selling meats on temporary stalls on those days. It was Shiv Sena, the so called hindu radical political outfit.

Mumbai does not have enough facility to carry out sacrifices on Bakrid at abattoirs and so the govt. allows to privately sacrifice the animals in the housing societies. A few years ago when some of us planned to sacrifice in our society, a few jains and marwadis literally begged us not to kill the animals. There was big ruckus as it put us to lot of difficulty at the last moment. But we all agreed and took the sacrifice to a nearby society. As a muslim we did not want to hurt anyone's sentiment to celebrate Eid. In India we all celebrate festivals of all religions. Thats how we are.

But unlike other religion Islam is a complete way of life effecting the everyday life a Muslim and all aspects of his life be it economic or social..so we don't really "sacrifice" to make God happy...
