Musharraf's political career launch speech (apology, promises and clean slate)

Oh God yes.

This sounds awesome and exactly what Pakistan needs.

Yeah, 9 years were not enough to clean up the fundamentalists, the khaki landgrabbers, the feudal lords, the non-tax-paying industrialists.

He could have been the Mustafa Kamal Pasha of Pakistan in October 1999 (minus Pasha's extreme policies against religion) but he did not. He harassed the politicians who refuse to tow his line and rewarded the rejects like the Chaudries of Gujrat (who are also extremely rich, btw).

Musharraf has good intentions. He always did. But he had his chance and he blew it.
'There is a tide in the affairs of men...'.

I hope he does not go back to Pakistan because he is likely to be killed by so many opposed to him. Heck, even when GHQ gets attacked then a former president does not have much chance.

By the way, he decided to bail out when the economy was already declining due to global slowdown AND increased incidents of terrorism inside Pakistan. I wish I can find that news article where Musharraf's gains were systematically shown to be declining starting sometime in 2007. Don't forget that America's economy too was red-hot in 2006.

WTH,Politics is non of his business,he is retired-general whose duty was to defend the borded, now he is retired so he should sit at his house and smoke cigar like other retired generals. It's totally stupid to see army into politics though he is retired.

But he has a desire to help his country.

He is an ordinary citizen of the state now, there are no restriction to one such man becoming active in Politics after this retirement.

As a citizen of Pakistan, he has every right to enter the fold of Pakistan's fabled politics. After all, having one more candidate who somewhat has a shot is better than the Sharif-Bhutto/Zardari deadly combo.

People suddenly counting 9 years should remember that Pakistan was doing fine, up until year 2006, despite the war. His last 2 years were pretty bad, no doubt, but to dismiss his entire ruling period is quite unjust.

The successful completion of mega projects, the real estate boom, the completion of roads, seeing Gwadar through, Thar Canal, the military projects, the second fastest gdp growth, etc.

On the political front, Joint electorate system, increase in reserved seats for women and minorities, restructuring of the HEC, womens empowerment act, the media freedom (discounting nov 3 actions). He has even tried to remove the blasphemy and hudood ordinance, but wasn't successful.

In the next 90 years Zardari can't do half of that.

Then don't you think it's gonna become a trend that after retiring, every general gonna launch his party,i do not see any example like this before that any retired armymen launched a party.

Not necessarily, you see Musharraf was groomed to lead the country and an average general would not know how to indulge in such, only because of limited or no exposure to the political world.

The last three dictators were all but finished by their last days, in one case literally. Musharraf on the other hand still has a chance to come back into power but by popular vote.

Is there an ethnic angle to Pakistani politics? Can anyone give me a quick rundown?

Well whatever musharraf did for the country positively shall be counted, but then those negative things which he did, where are those?he brought US army in Pakistan in 2001,he sold innocent citizens to US,he made himself strong and did what was favourable to him, emergency,Aafia siddique case............the list will go on and on..more over he came from backdoor and with illegal way and kept on breaking promises.

.
rather bizzare statement by mush today he wants army to have a constituational rule to play politics , is he out of his mind ?

.
These sort of statements are what make the best men into heinous dictators.

To save Pakistan, we all have to work everyday and everyone has to do their part. One man can't do anything.

but u have to have a good leader!
the current gov wouldn't let anyone do "their part"...
so we need him!

Sir,Those three dictators were notorious,so as musharraf ,they all broke the law.We know that the country has seen half of it's era as dictators prevailed.Don't you think if musharraf becomes PM of Pakistan(would be miracle),then it will look awkward that a person breaks the law, brings democracy down and later will be sitting on PM seat with so called slogan of democracy?

Democracy means 'rule of the people', they brought Musharraf down, they could vote him back in.

This is what democracy is all about, also we are willing to overlook the past for a better future.

.
He almost seemed to be disowning his own book with his statements..
"I was misled by political people".. Oh.. so he admits to being an idiot..

Personal opinions aside..
The general is welcomed to come back.. and try his hand at a political career...
I would caution him.. considering one of his staunchest supporters was humiliated in the election for the Karachi seat..to the extent he had to pay the penalty for having less than the minimum required votes.

Sir if past can be overlooked, then why not people supported zardari from his first day in office and say that ''we are overlooking past of his for better future''.same will go with musharraf, his past is something which has seen clash with lawyers, media, democratic parties and other many guilts which we already know.
