The hearty trip to Texan Paris

Paris claims to be the “best small town in Texas”. But it is not famous for any state-of-the-art medical facilities. So why did President Pervez Musharraf spend expensive jet fuel to go all the way from New York to Paris, Texas, just for a “medical checkup”? CNN wondered about it, too.

A later explanation was that the president was examined by a cardiologist whom the president “knows”. He better know Dr Arjumand F Hashmi because Dr Hashmi is related to First Lady Sehba Musharraf.

President Musharraf’s own cardiologist, Dr Azhar Farooqi, of Karachi, is a world famous cardiologist and actually performed a thorough checkup of the president two to three years back, while staying in Islamabad for a few days and cancelling all his Karachi appointments. His own younger brother, Nadeem, is a physician in Chicago, which has much better medical facilities.

The Pakistani community has some of the best known cardiologists in America and this examination could have been done in Washington or New York. “Paris Regional (Medical Center) for checkup?” scoffed a specialist. “Lahore (hospitals) has more modern facilities.”

So why take a whole empty plane on a 5,000-mile return flight? Did the first lady simply want to visit her cousin? But that could be done by Dr Hashmi visiting New York or Washington. After talking to several sources, it appeared that Dr Hashmi was unable to establish a successful practice in Connecticut and then later in Florida. Almost a year ago he joined the Paris Regional Medical Center, where his employment status is still fluid.

The president stayed there for roughly two and one half hours and one specialist said one could not have a thorough checkup and also have “lunch with the community” in that short span of time.

There are only two conclusions: there is either a very bad heart condition that he simply cannot afford to disclose in Pakistan or to anyone but one in the family or he went there simply to boost the professional and social status of his brother-in-law.

Our great leader has just finished his tour of Jordan, Syria, Saudi Arabia, UAE and a few other places. Then he went to Indonesia and Malaysia

And now he will visit Iran and Turkey.

In an effort to unite Ummah. As if all the Pakistans problems have been solved that this great leader of ours is out to unite the Ummah
