The Election Commission Tribunal in Rawalpindi on Tuesday rejected a plea by former president and chief of All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) Pervez Musharraf against rejection of his nomination papers from National Assembly constituency, NA-48 Islamabad.

The tribunal retained Returning Officer’s earlier decision to disallow the former military ruler from contesting polls on the grounds that he doesn’t met the criteria set in Article 63 and 62 of the Constitution.

In his brief decision, the tribunal said the retired general put judges of superior judiciary under house arrest during 2007 emergency, and that he is no more a pious and righteous person.

Musharraf’s counsel said the decision to impose emergency was not solely taken by him but it was the decision of entire government. The lawyer said Musharraf is the only leader who declared his assets of worth 640 million.

After objections of rival candidates, Musharraf’s nomination papers have also been rejected from Karachi’s NA-250, Kusur’s NA-139, but accepted from Chitral’s NA-32.
