KARACHI - Minister of State for Ports and Shipping and leader of the PPP, Nabeel Gabol Tuesday said that there was no difference between the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) and the covert deal stuck between PML-N chief Mian Nawaz Sharif with former military dictator Pervez Musharraf.

Talking to mediamen at the protest camp, he said: “The agreement reached between Nawaz Sharif and Musharraf which bound Nawaz for not taking part in the politics for ten years. The agreement date will end on December 30.”

It may be mentioned here that the NRO was promulgated in October 2007 following a deal struck between the slain chairperson of PPP, Benazir Bhutto, with the former military ruler Pervez Musharraf.
Nabeel Gabol, who is also a central executive committee member of PPP, said that the MQM and PPP were natural allies and the differences between the two parties could adversely affect the development of Sindh province.

“MQM was playing in the hands of mischievous elements but now they have realised the gravity of the situation,” he said. “These elements are not the friends of both the parties and they want to destabilise the metropolis because the destabilisation of Karachi will destabilise the entire country,” he added.

Gabol brushed aside the impression that President Asif Zardari was weak and losing grip on the government. “President Zardari is the co-chairman of the PPP and the PPP has strengthened the federation.”
He warned that any conspiracy of destabilising the present elected government of the PPP could badly affect the federation.
“Dictatorial regimes of Ziaul Haq and Pervez Musharraf too had failed to affect the PPP. Now, democratically elected government of the PPP will complete the five years term,” he maintained.
Gabol said that some rotten-eggs were also the part of PPP’s government but he urged the opponents not to harm the PPP government because of rotten-eggs.

To a query, he accepted the poor performance of some ministers saying that December is the month of sacrifices and someone have to make sacrifices in this month.

He applauded the efforts of Army Chief General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani. He said that he (General Kayani) knew his duties and said that the war in Waziristan was not for the sake of Pakistan alone but this was a war for those countries too who suffer from terrorism.

. .
At least the deal between Gen. Musharraf and PPPP was open to public but NS denied any deal for many years but in the end bhanada phoot gaya

.
Hum, the deal was similar; as far as I remember, NS was nominated in the Hijaking case, in Helicopter case, and was even sentenced by the summary courts. The deal between Musharraf and Saudis/Britain was resulted in his exile while he was not pardoned on any of the falsified case. The deal between Musharraf, Benazir/America/Britain resulted in NRO through which all the cases against BB and many others were closed down, and she was allowed to come back into the country and take part in the general election. Only an idiot like Gabool can find similarity between the two deals.

What "bhanda" man? Nawaz Sharif would make a deal with India before he makes one with Musharraf. Forced exile, jail time, public humiliation, and on and on; the idea is absurd. Coming from "Minister of State for Ports and Shipping and leader of the PPP, Nabeel Gabol", I don't even have to comment on the credibility of this source.

Musharraf, in his infinite wisdom, gave us Zardari. Don't like Zardari? You know who to blame. Those who can't hear anything against the Mush or the Zard are now trying to justify this by saying Musharraf cut deals with everyone, like he was some believer in the "right to cheat for all".

Pakistani politics is a mud-pit, it's freaking depressing.

This is not true ... People in Pakistan voted for PPPP, knowing well that Zardari control all matters within PPPP ... so people in Pakistan got Zardari for themselves ....

It is because of NS that Pakistan has this deal culture. NS should have shown courage like ZA Bhutto but NS chose to run away with his family, leaving behind all his supporters and party workers.

This link has the copy of the deal:

What deal, Musharaf and Army were the culprits. What about Musharaf's deal with Zardari for not coming to pakistan. Once zardari and Musharaf's masters in Afghanistan are gone the cases will open against him and this time there will be no deal.

What deal - May be you should try the link:

NS is the pioneer of deals in Pakistan.

NS should be hanged under Article 6 (ii) for supporting Gen. Zia and for supporting the illegal change in our constitution.

Both Zaradri and NS are the same ... both are corrupt and both think Pakistan as their miraas

Agreed, but inlcude Musharaff in that list too!

.
Sticking to the Topic, here is my say...

Nawaz Sharif and Musharraf's deal was the same as NRO?

The answer is YES, however, in nawaz's case the gun was pointed at his temporal by Musharraf but in NRO the gun was pointed at Musharraf's temporal.

I guess this resolves the equality issue of these two deals.

My POV has been very clear from day one - Gen. Musharraf has also made errors but he is better than NS and Zardari because with him I get the sense of patriotism and far less corruption.

I actually was happy when NS won the election but this guy turned out be a bloody wadrea too. From firing of Gen Kiramt and to Gen Ali Quli's resignation - all the way and all of it was due to insecurity of NS.

Musharaff is better than Nawaz because you say so? To me they both are same.

Regarding corruption have a look at this:

There is one difference here that should be highlighted. There is no evidence or even a charge of "personal" financial irregularity or corruption against Musharraf. Unfortunately the same cannot be said about either NS or Zardari and their henchmen. Although all have hurt Pakistan's political progress, however not being financially corrupt in a country where ministers claim "corruption hamara haq hai" is a big deal! Lets recognize that as discomforting it may be to admit that Musharraf was better than these other chaps on this count.

.
Only difference between both deals is that Sharif already got relieved by iftikhar ch but Zardari's is all set to get his relief from very same iftikhar ch.
Technical difference is in first case (pardon undertaking by Sharif) only Sharif got benifited, where as later case (NRO) benifited a larger group of people.

So sure you are?

Former Senator Saifur Rehman who was chairman of NAB during Nawaz Sgarif’s time, spells out some details of Zardari’s Swiss corruption cases specially related to Swiss money-laundering and Surrey Palace.

Maj. Gen. (R) Rasheed Qureshi is also the guest on today’s talk show.
The Ex-Senator, who was a close confidante of Mian Nawaz Sharif, also claims that he has evidence that Gen Musharraf accepted $10 million as graft in power project deals while he was the army chief. Saifur Rehamn, who is theformer chairman of the Ehtesab Bureau (NAB), also claimed that secretary general to the president, Salman Faruqui, had provided most of the evidences of allegedcorruption by Asif Ali Zardari.

Saif said he “still had sufficient evidence of Zardari’s corruption”, adding Faruqui had also given details about Javed Pasha and Sindh Home Minister Zulfiqar Mirza.

He said a foreign diplomat had provided him with proof of former president Pervez Musharraf receiving $10 million in connection with power projects. The former chairman said the video recording of the conversation about Musharraf’s corruption was made at the PM House. He said when Musharraf managed to get his hands on the recording he had various cases registered against Saif and subjected him to torture.

Saif was let go on plea bargain. He accused Justice Irshad Ahmed Khan and Justice Sheikh Riaz of “muddying judicial affairs”. He said both judges had been on the payroll of Benazir Bhutto and Zardari.

General Pervez Musharraf paid no wealth tax for five years on his extensive lands and properties

Issue No 47, June 22-28, 2003
By Maryam Hussain

ISLAMABAD: General Pervez Musharraf paid no wealth tax for five years on his extensive lands and properties, although he publicly announced in November 1999 that he had done so, a Pakistan Government Income Tax Department document obtained by SA Tribune reveals.

And finally when he did pay wealth tax in 1999-2000 on his assets worth much more than Rs 30-40 million in the market (or over half a million US dollars), he coughed up only Rs 710 or $12.

The copy of the document has signatures of concerned officials which have been erased by SA Tribune to protect them from reprisals.

Only recently when Musharraf sold his 2 squares of land in Bahawalpur, he received millions. This amount should be reflected in his wealth declarations now but conveniently in the last Budget, wealth tax has been abolished.

The total Income Tax deducted at the source in five years from 1994-1999 was Rs 115,524 (US$ 1,992) on a total declared income of Rs 1.24 million ($ 21,430).

The document shows General Pervez Musharraf declared an income of Rs 146,629 in 1994-95 but the CBR assessed it as Rs 151,189 and taxed him Rs 16,261, which was deducted from his salary as is a routine.

In 1995-96 his declared and assessed income was the same Rs 197,358 and the assessed/ paid tax was Rs 24,472.

Similarly in the next two years (96-97 and 97-98) his declared/assessed income remained unchanged at Rs 205, 967 and Rs 213,417. He paid Rs 24, 684 and Rs 31,927 as Income tax in these two years.

Suddenly in the next year when he became Chief of the Army Staff something different happened to his tax assessment. He declared an income of Rs 222,046 but it was assessed at Rs 226,846. Surprisingly the tax he paid was only Rs 18,180 or Rs 13,747 less than the previous year.

The document shows that he declared an income of Rs 252,670 for the next full year of his tenure as Army Chief but it was not assessed till then. This story of his Income Tax may be explained or justified in some ways but the Wealth Tax story is the real one. It is here that the "real picture" of General Pervez Musharraf emerges as an honest and upright man.

Before his declarations of how much "wealth" he had are analyzed, the official declaration of his assets, made shortly after he took over in the October 1999 coup, has to be kept in view. The official news agency Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) released this report (In Box) on November 2, 1999:

According to the given list, except the parent's house in Islamabad and daughter's house in Karachi all other property belongs to General Musharraf himself.

This includes 2000 square yard of land in Defence Society Karachi, over 1200 sq. yards plot in Morgah Rawalpindi, 900 sq. yards plot in Peshawar, 2 squares in Bahawalpur (sold now) , 600 sq. yds in Eastridge and 1200 sq yards in Gwadur. The document of his wealth tax return shows the wealth (which includes the lands) declared by General Musharraf for the year 1998-99 (which ends June 30, 1999) was valued at less than one million rupees, or Rs 947,000 to be exact.

Thus according to this document, Musharraf's Karachi Rawalpindi, Lahore, Peshawar, Bahawalpur and Gwadur lands all put together are worth less than Rs 1 million or US Dollars 17,241 ($1=Rs58).

But according to any person with an ordinary knowledge and intelligence, his Karachi plot is worth over Rs 20 million, his Rawalpindi piece of land values at least Rs 5 million, his Peshawar plot could easily fetch Rs 2-3 million. The market value of all other lands put together, is well over Rs 30 million. Probably much more as these estimates are very conservative.

His house in Rawalpindi would be worth another at least Rs 10 million if not more. Thus his real wealth, other than cash or securities or overseas accounts is more than Rs 40 million, but he has declared it to be less than Rs 1 million.

On top of this huge under-declaration General Musharraf declared in November 1999 that he had paid all his taxes, including Wealth tax till June 30, 1999.

The document reveals that for the year 1998-99 (which ends June 30, 1999) no Wealth Tax was paid as according to his declaration the wealth was "BTL" or Below Tax Limits.

Musharraf declared his wealth to be Rs 777,000 in 1994-95 and 1995-96, Rs 597,000 in 1996-97, Rs 975,000 in 1997-98, Rs 947,000 in 1998-99 and Rs 1,129,000 in 1999-2000. In that year he paid a wealth tax of Rs 710 or US $ 12.24. The document shows the CBR had not assessed the wealth by then.

The following story was run by APP on Nov 2, 1999:
