Mursi woos Tahrir crowd with symbolic oath before inauguration

'The people are higher than any authority or institution as they are the ones who unseat and appoint,' Mursi says

Egypt's president-elect Mohammad Mursi has hailed the people as the biggest power and took a symbolic oath before his official inauguration on Saturday.

"The people are higher than any authority or institution as they are the ones who unseat and appoint," Mursi, surrounded by presidential guards, told thousands of anti-military protesters in Tahrir Square on Friday evening.

His gesture of reading the oath enthralled the crowd, many of them have been camping out in the iconic square to protest what they say the military grab of power. "With your will, I'm the decision-maker and will not relinquish any of the presidential powers (to the military)," added the Islamist leader.

The generals have drawn wide criticism, mainly from Islamists, for issuing an interim constitution seen as expanding their powers at the expense of the president's.

Mursi, a former senior official in the Muslim Brotherhood, is due on Saturday to take the oath of office before the Supreme Constitutional Court under the controversial interim constitution. His symbolic swearing-in at Tahrir was an obvious bid to win over the crowd and project himself as a populist strongman.

"I've come to you because I am completely convinced that you are the source of power and legitimacy," he told the crowd who was waving the Egyptian flag and chanting his name. "No institution can be above this (people's) will."
Mursi, Egypt's first elected civilian president opened his jacket, telling his cheering audience that he was not wearing a bullet-proof vest. "I am confident that you are my protectors," he said. Tahrir was the hub for mass protests that eventually removed former strongman Hosni Mubarak from power.

Earlier in the day, Mursi, 60, had performed the congregational Friday prayers in Al Azhar Mosque, a famous seat of learning in Cairo.

well if a sniper want to kill someone with a bullet proof vest he will use anti tank bullets , then he can tear about 400 meter of bullet proof vest with one shot
or he will use Teflon bullets ...

Ahmadinejad always does this,he always goes in crowd in all parts of the country (even near insecure borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan) without any Bullet proof vest.This is nothing so special.

Typical some in Pakistani media focussing on none events. I am not a supporter of PPP but surely we need to provide security for our officials is not unreasonable

That last picture is amazing.

Finally after roughly 60 years of independence we are not starting to see true leaders of the people come up.

Erdogan in Turkey, Imran Khan in Pakistan and Mursi in Egypt.

We need more Muslim leaders who represent the people.

Actually most Egyptian aren't expecting much. We all know we have a long way to go. Any fast paced progress is an option. Egyptians wanted change, and they got it. Egypt has potential to be hundred times better than what it is now. It will take time thu. Personal and social freedom is the key for better Egypt.
