  • The 26/11 attack is a classic trans-border terrorist event: Mahmud Ali Durrani
  • Hafiz Saeed has no utility, we should act against him

NEW DELHI: Former Pakistan National Security Adviser Mahmud Ali Durrani has admitted that 2008 Mumbai terror attacks were carried out by a terror group based in Pakistan.

At the same time, Durrani, however, said the Pakistani government had no role in the Mumbai attacks.

Durrani was speaking at a conference on combating terrorism at the Institute of Defence Studies and Analysis in Delhi.

"26/11 Mumbai strike, carried out by a terror group based in Pakistan, was a classic trans-border terrorist event", he added.

The former Pakistan NSA also hit out at JUD chief Hafiz Saeed .

"Hafiz Saeed has no utility, we should act against him," Durrani said.

India had earlier this month asked Pakistan to reinvestigate the 2008 Mumbai terror attack case and put on trial Jammat-ud-Dawah chief Hafiz Saeed who is currently under house arrest in Lahore under the anti-terrorism law.

India had made the fresh demand in a reply to Pakistan's request to send 24 Indian witnesses to record their statements in the case.

The Pakistan government on January 30 had put Saeed and the four leaders of JuD and Falah-e-Insaniat under house arrest in Lahore under the country's anti-terrorism act.

Saeed, who carries a reward of $10 million, was also put under house arrest after Mumbai terror attacks in November 2008 but he was freed by court in 2009.

Let us hope that pakistan government will act against all perpetrators. That will give a massage that Pakistan is serious in fight against terrorism.

whats new in it? every one knows who the perpetrators are. Every time some one makes a statement they stress the fact that pakistan govt or organization had no role in it. This is more of a smoke screen stmts only to divert focus from the accused. Given that they have not taken action on the group, its not hard to guess who are the real ones.

India should provide solid proofs and Pakistani Govt and courts should also take it seriously. Such kind of terror attacks are unacceptable. This should be sorted out on priority basis without considering anyone's ego.

This general was directly involved in the killing of Gen. Zia and was dismissed from his position after Mumbai attacks took place - for the similar baseless allegations towards Pakistan. He was the first person to "admit" that Ajmal Qasab was Pakistani, even though there were no grounds for his statements.

Like Tarik Fateh, Durrani's delusions are born in his head and they die in Indian ears.

Look at the timings of his statement against the country and after how many years. Look who's looking to take avenge against Pakistan, look who's neck is in the courts and look who's trying to set himself free from DAWN leaks. Look harder, you will see face of Mian Nawaz Sharef behind this ba$tard.

Tell something out of the box & something we don't know....
whats new in it?

To me unless Hafiz Saeed is brought to book, not much is going to matter.
Often we equate fighting terrorism as eliminating terrorists but that is akin to treating symptoms and not necessarily the disease.
Unless people or organizations that brainwash others to take up arms are dealt with, there won't be any permanent respite.
In context of above, statement that Hafiz saeed serves no purpose to Pakistan is important.
while i'm not sure if this line is also how establishment in Pakistan thinks, but if there is an actual departure from that, i think it is positive sign for future.

• Pakistan has no use for Hazfiz Saeed, Mahmud Ali Durrani says

• Lashkar-e-Taiba, a terror-group based in Pakistan accused of carrying out the attack

• Durrani called it a “classic” example of cross-border terrorism

NEW DELHI, India - Pakistan’s former national security adviser Mahmud Ali Durrani in a key acknowledgement on Monday said the 26/11 Mumbai attacks was carried out by Lashkar-e-Taiba, a terror-group based in Pakistan.

Calling it a “classic” example of cross-border terrorism, Durrani, who was ousted from the position of national security adviser for confirming Mumbai attacker Ajmal Kasab’s Pakistani nationality to the media, however, said the Pakistani government had no role in the attack.

"I hate to admit that the 26/11 Mumbai strike, carried out by a terror group based in Pakistan, was a classic trans-border terrorist event,” said Durrani during an event at the Institute of Defence Studies and Analysis in Delhi.

Suggesting that the Pakistan government wanted to cover up the attack, he said, “I made a statement on Pakistan television which the Pakistan Government did not like and I was sacked.”

Referring to the Jamaat-ud-Dawah chief, Durrani, who was the NSA during the attacks in Mumbai that killed some 166 people in 2008, said, “Hafiz Saeed has no utility, we should act against him.”

Hafiz Saeed carries a $10 million-reward announced by the United States.

He was put under house arrest on January 30 this year.

"I can say with authority no one on the ISI — Pakistan's intelligence agency — or establishment was aware of the plan to strike in India. I had also told the U.S., that they are free to go after the Haqqani network inside Pakistan. We may have made some noise, but deep down we will be happy if they were to be eliminated by USA," he added.

The former NSA also condemned terrorism, saying, “Each nation should make sure that its territory should not be used by terrorist outfits,” he said.

India has provided neighbor Pakistan with ample evidence of the involvement of senior Lashkar commanders in the attacks on the iconic Taj Hotel in Mumbai, the Oberoi Trident Hotel, Leopold Cafe the Nariman House Jewish Centre, as well as the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminal.
