Mumbai and Karachi: a contrast

I recently visited India's biggest commercial and economic hub Mumbai and eastern Uttar Pradesh after a period of six years.

To my surprise, I found Mumbai a very peaceful city where the crime rate is believed to be only 10 per cent of what we experience in Karachi, though Mumbai is more populous and cosmopolitan than Karachi.

There was hardly any case of car theft, cellphone snatching, and targeted killings. The main reason for this peaceful environment in Mumbai is that both central and provincial governments keep this city under close scrutiny and they are fully committed to the development, particularly in respect of infrastructure, education, law and order, etc.

On the other hand, Karachi is not owned even by the provincial government in terms of development and maintenance of law and order though it is the hub of our economy.

I also visited Sultanpur in eastern Uttar Pradesh. I found it peaceful. Cases of kidnapping, cattle theft, honour killings, robbery and other crimes are rarely reported. The police do not carry any firearms.

The most striking feature of this area is an increasing literacy rate, particularly at the village level where more and more people are coming out of the poverty line because of increasing agricultural output and income.

Schoolgoing boys and girls can be seen on bicycles and on foot across cultivated fields and deserted places for schooling without any fear or risk. This was something unbelievable.

The Indian government provides free lunch to students in all government-run schools up to primary and secondary levels. Unemployed and poor persons are provided food items on subsidised rates through ration cards.

The only positive thing we match with India is independence of judiciary and freedom of the media.

- ABAD AHMED, Karachi

One thing auther forgot to mention, The War Pakistan is invovled in since last TEN years, India has enjoyed peace and stability coupled with sound economic policies.
Its my honest belief that give Pakistan a 15 years of politically stability (sans army involvement) with peace and along with little more honest leadership. we will be far better than india in all respects.

Then the contractors or promoters need to bribe the government officials to get clearance for their projects.

Its a reality. Even in the city where i live, you need to get special permission from the aviation dept. to build a ten storey or more height building.

The demographics of Mumbai cant be as diverse as Karachi if someone wishes to see a large mix of ethnicities i.e: from far east of subcontinent stretching all the way to central asia .... VISIT KARACHI !!

:disagree: You underestimate the Karachi. Karachi have greater potential than Shanghai and Mumbai.

You mean to say proper utilization of sea routes, right?
They need to open up their port for Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan etc for free trade. Only then the full potential of Karachi will be realized.

.
Landlocked countries of Central Asia, Which port they need it most? Karachi.
China's future oil transport, Which port we need it most? Karachi.
150 million Pakistanis, Which port they need it most? Karachi.

:coffee:I bet that Karachi future must be one of the best cities in Asia.

Bombay is diverse with population from whole India represented. We don't have foreigners who are living in Bombay as settlers.*(exception may be persians, russians -but they too will have to leave the country if found illegally staying)

if I'm not mistaken foreigners especially middle east people easily enters Karachi ? Visa Regime is not strong enough?

karachi's location shows that it has all ways to grow up as an important port town. The present state is as if owning a rolls-royce phantom and keeping it in the garage!

The 10 Worst Cities In The World

Healthcare: 45.8

Education: 66.7

Infrastructure: 51.8

Overall rating: 40.9

In terms of healthcare, education and infrastructure, Karachi has some of the highest scores in the bottom 10 but the increasing instability of the city and country as a whole has seen Karachi's ranking slip since 2009.
