Multi-Role Combat Vessels (MRCVs)

The new Multi-Role Combat Vessels will replace the ageing Victory-class Missile Corvettes, which have served with distinction since 1989. Delivery is expected to begin from 2025, with full delivery expected around 2030.

Besides improving capabilities, the new MRCVs will be custom-built for lean manning and incorporate technologies to automate certain functions. This results in the MRCV using less manpower – about half the size found in modern frigates. In addition, this will result in operational cost savings of up to 10 per cent, compared to similar-sized frigates.

The MRCVs will also have unmanned air and sea drones to extend their reach and flexibility against threats.

No mention of number of Vertical Launching System cells in each vessel. Interesting to note the modular mission payload capabilities of the MRCV and LMV (Littoral Mission Vessel). Upgrades for the Formidable Class are scheduled too.

Some indigenous developments maybe quietly slipped in. As an integrated, networked armed force, SAF should be able to punch well above its weight for the coming decades, if there are no mishaps.

At the recently concluded IMDEX Maritime Defence Exhibition 2019, ST Engineering Marine displayed its Vanguard 130 "frigate"/destroyer concept.

At IMDEX Asia 2019, ST Engineering unveiled the latest addition to its Vanguard series, the Vanguard 130 Multi-Role Combatant.

The Vanguard series design concept focuses on “One Design” which can be applied across “Multiple Classes” with “Modular Capabilities”. The concept also allows for commonalities (e.g. scalable hull form, machinery & equipment, system & layout designs, standards for outfitting and installation) across the different classes of vessels including the new Vanguard 130 Multi-role Combatant.

The Vanguard 130 Multi-Role Combatant is a good fit for ship operators looking for enhanced cost efficiencies and flexible ship deployment. It is part of a series of five classes that delivers multi-modal capabilities with one design. This enables enhanced cost efficiencies across the platforms as all five classes share common hull forms that reduce acquisition costs.

Owing to its highly scalable and modular design, the Vanguard allows operators to exercise more flexibility in the ship’s deployment, including space for carrying of unmanned vehicles for warfare or other operations. The in-house developed and patented Q-LARS 2.0 for handling a wide range of small crafts and unmanned surface vehicles can be easily adapted for use in every Vanguard series vessel.

The vessel is a full-fledged surface combatant because it is fitted with VLS for surface to air missile, anti-ship missile launchers, torpedo launchers, decoy launchers as well as 76mm, 30mm and 12.7mm gun mounts. The ship has a length of 130 meters, a speed of 28 knots and a displacement of 5,000 tons.

ST Engineering announced the launch of its upgraded SkyArcher Counter Drone System. The first such solution of its kind in Singapore, the SkyArcher does not interfere with the communications signals of surrounding authorised drones as well as other communications signals in a radio frequency dense urban environment.

On showcase for the first time is the AgilLOC Antenna Element Compact (AgilLOC AEC), an integrated anti-jam antenna system which can nullify the interference of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals.

The Integrated Ship Bridge Simulator also made its debut at the show. The system features Virtual Reality (VR) stations that enhance realism with targeted scenarios including berthing and dealing with small vessel threats.

By no means is it assured that Vanguard 130 will be chosen as the MRCV platform for the RSN. There are indications that an improved iteration of the Vanguard series of "frigates" may be offered by ST Marine for RSN's MRCV requirements.

Looks like the RSN might be ASEAN's most advanced, most powerful and best trained navy for the decades to come, if things go according to plan.

The LHD's are yet to be selected either. ST Marine's Endurance 170 may be a little inadequate IMO. A few more Invincible subs may be in the offing. An improved MPA, upgraded Formidables, LMVs, advanced automation and sense making systems, modular architecture and "mission payloads" (that remain classified for obvious reasons) mean RSN can project power a long distance away from home.
