Taliban mullahs jockey for position in the organization as U.S. prepares for its exit in 2011
CAMP MOREHEAD, Afghanistan - Taliban mullahs are acting more like the Sopranos than jihadis in a murderous rivalry over who'll run things after U.S. forces start leaving.
Insurgents are offing rival leaders to become "permanent" midlevel management, Afghan and U.S. officers told the Daily News.
"The Taliban are fighting each other to become permanent leader in key districts because they know the U.S. is leaving in 2011," said a senior Afghan officer leading commando and Special Forces troops at this camp south of Kabul.
U.S. officers confirmed that some Taliban leaders have assassinated competitors or dimed them out to Special Operations troops to clear a political path. While Washington debates President Obama's squishy July 2011 deadline to begin a withdrawal, the Taliban assume it's a certainty.
