I wonder how the alchemist and philosophers of the Muslim World in the 12th, 13th century had more freedom (some even questioning God) than now.
Same is the case with India. Everyone getting intolerant

About tolerance well I don't knew about the rest of the world but for some political reason in Iran at the time of safavid dynasty after people like Molla Sadra and sheikh Baha'i for years we had no scholar who were willing to discus on the religious matter or care about modern science and the majority of the scholars only told what they get from previous generation and naturaly it resulted in intolerance in later generation of scholars.
