The initiative is being spearheaded by Oscar-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid

No cinema, no problem. Sharmeen Obaid's production company SOC Films is launching a new project called Dekh Magar Pyar Se, which is all about taking cinema to the people.

The mobile cinema hopes to compensate for the lack of community spaces in Pakistan.

"SOC Films has been screening its films and projects across Pakistan for a number of years. We have realized that there are very few community centers and places where the public in smaller cities can watch quality entertainment," shares the Oscar-winning filmmaker with Images.

"Dekh Magar Pyaar Se is an attempt to introduce films, music, animation to a wider community. We are extremely excited about our new venture; an open call will be going out to filmmakers across Pakistan and we look forward to introducing their work to different audiences."

While it's an intriguing initiative, it's not exactly the first of its kind. So what sets it apart?

Obaid explains: "Dekh Magar Pyaar Se will travel across all provinces, starting off in Karachi in March. We're creating a route that will take the mobile cinema into communities where they have not had the opportunity to watch films of this caliber. We're encouraged by other such initiatives and hope that together we can all create a difference in society."

"We'll be doing beta testing in March and will roll out at the end of that month," she adds.

It's raining rom-coms in Pakistan as we gear up for another one later this year.

Aabis Raza's upcoming Maan Jao Naa is based on the struggles faced by friends who transition from university life into the practical world.

Produced by Muhammad Khalid Ali and co-written by Asma Nabeel & Ahsan Raza, the film stars Adeel Chaudhry, Hajra Yamin, Ayaz Samoo, Asma Abbas, Ghana Ali, Asif Raza Mir and "a surprise international star"!

Images got in touch with Moor star Ayaz Samoo for deets on his character and here's what we know so far:

"My character's name is Asim. He's a fun guy and the film shows his transformation from being funny to serious -- you know, as someone matures with time and age, that's been showcased through my character."

He explains that the film is a mix of "lighter and emotional moments" and comprises of a "good soundtrack."

The film has already starting shooting; 15 days in and Ayaz already has stories to tell.

"[We were shooting] in the blistering heat; from sunburn to swimming in the cold water at Hawkes' Bay," he says. "There was a scene when we were dying from the heat and then there was a scene when we were shivering from the cold."

With a promising start to 2017, the actor shares he has two more film projects in the pipeline which he cannot disclose at the moment.

Sania Saeed & Farah Shah play lesbian lovers in 'Kitni Girhein Baqi Hain' & shock Pakistan!
Our media has started to highlight homosexuality, but is Pakistan as a nation ready to accept this reality?

Everything that was kept hush hush earlier is finally being highlighted by our local media. Taboo subjects such as rape, child abuse, illicit affairs and the third gender which were things we dared not talk about in front of families are now being portrayed openly in our dramas.

But there was one subject that was however not touched upon anywhere at all, a taboo we dared not bring up, female homosexuality! Yes, there had been subtle comedies hinting at gayness for men in various movies and dramas but female homosexuality was never in hindsight… as yet!

Things, however, seem to have taken quite a turn. HUM TV, with its liberal approach has brought a taboo to life. And guess what, they roped in two strong females to play the part, Sania Saeed and Farah Shah, who certainly weren’t concerned at all, and even if they were, they didn’t let show, during the portrayal of such bold characters in the latest episode of Kitni Girhein Baqi Hain.

We’re still undecided whether this effort at breaking stereotypes was an intelligent one or not because the audience seems quite unwelcoming to the entire idea of lesbians on screen, yet. This effort to do something different for a change and bringing up female homosexuality on National Television was probably not a good idea since the Pakistani audience isn’t ready for such bold storylines at the moment.

But yes, kudos to Sania Saeed and Farah Shah for taking up such bold roles and pulling them off effortlessly. You go ladies!!! More power to you!

Upcoming film Azaadi tells the story of a man who sacrifices it all for the freedom of Kashmir and how his vision is carried forward by young people he inspires.

Starring Nadeem Baig, Moammar Rana and Sonya Hussayn, Azaadi will mark the directorial debut of Imran Malik, the son of veteran film producer/director Pervez Malik. Imran has also written the story while his brother Irfan Malik has produced the film.

"The film has elements of patriotism, a very powerful love story, some action scenes - a film has never been attempted on such a big canvas in Pakistan before," said Imran in conversation with Images.

Actor Sonya Hussayn also revealed that the film also conveys a strong message of women's empowerment.

"My character Zara is an independent journalist, who is [of] Pakistani [origin] but was born and brought up in the UK. She's outspoken, feisty and just a very empowered woman that many young girls will be able to relate to," she said in an earlier interview.

Azaadi is being shot by Australian cinematographer Ben Jasper (who also shot Hrithik Roshan-starrer Bang Bang) and features a soundtrack with music by Sahir Ali Bagga and tracks by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Quratulain Baloch and Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan.

The film will release this year.
