Move to open Bangladesh consulate office in Guwahati protested
An Assam political party protested the move to open consulate office of Bangladesh in Guwahati.
The party, The Bodoland Janajati Suraksha Mancha (BJSM) on Monday said the proposal for consulate office of Bangladesh was objectionable as it could facilitate opportunities to illegal immigrants to enter the region, according to a report by www.sentinelassam.com.
In a press release, president Janaklal Basumatary, working president Daorao Dekhreb Narzary and general secretary Jayanta Boro said the original indigenous tribal people of Assam were of the opinion that opening of the Bangladesh consulate in Guwahati was uncalled for considering the volatile issue of illegal migrants from Bangladesh.
They said the process of detection, deportation and deletion from voters’ list of illegal migrants from East Pakistan, now Bangladesh, was still not complete in Assam.
The opening of Bangladesh consulate office solely for issuing Bangladeshi visas to the visitors of Bangladesh from Assam was done with the intention to facilitate the illegal migrants from that country to obtain Indian citizenship by obtaining Indian passport.
This is highly against the security and survival of the vulnerable sons of the soil of Assam, they said.
The leaders of the indigenous tribal organization said it was not denying fact that the illegal migrants were causing grave threat to the security of land, political, cultural, economical rights and very survival of the indigenous tribal people of Assam.
“If the illegal migrants are made citizens of India by providing them Indian passport then it will legalize their illegal occupation of land, political rights in Assam, particularly in vulnerable tribal land and politics, causing complete extinction like Chakma tribes in Chittagong province of Bangladesh.”
The leaders urged the Government of Assam and Government of India not to issue any Indian passport to suspected Pakistani or Bangladeshi illegal migrants to obtain Bangladesh visa and that the proposal to open the Bangladeshi consulate in Guwahati should be scraped immediately.
They also requested the Government of Assam and Government of India not to use the armed forces against the protected tribal people of Assam under AFSPA.
The organization also submitted memorandum to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal urging him not to allow opening of Bangladesh consulate office in Guwahati and the copy was also sent to the Prime Minister and Home Minister of India.
