Some people misunderstand me.

Maneuverability is great, the more the better... but it is foolish to invest $$ into it at the expense of other aircraft attributes. And especially, it does not define a fighter jet.

Unlike Vietnam, we now have combat data that does indeed validate what I am saying.

A BFM engagement is very similar to a knife fight between two soldiers. Armies practice unarmed combat and bayonet drills. Does it happen in real life? Yes, but as a percentage of casualties in modern war, it is microscopic. To spend all day training for a knife fight at the expense of squad tactics, small arms, artillery, etc, is ridiculous. Yet that is what we see too often in aviation.

An Air Show is a bit like seeing demo squads of soldiers who do Tae Kwon Do, break boards and such. Looks cool, but not really all that applicable.

"Look at our ripped soldiers doing those axe-kicks and karate moves! They are awesome troops! Guaranteed to win in battle!" Not really...

And the Mike Mullen thing is a bit perplexing. Is someone trying to imply he is stunned and awed at what he saw? To me it looks like he's rubbing his nose because it itches.

Cockpits show very little about what a fighter can really do. Look at an F-35 cockpit. NO HUD! Must be a P.O.S.

China only showed Mullen the cockpit of an old Su-27sk (part of the original imports in the 90s). He probably wouldn't be too impressed with the dashboards.

We've left WW2 behind. You don't need to maneuver into anybody's six o'clock any more. Those days ended about 1980.

Air show maneuvers are a great way to vacuum mega-$$ out of the coffers of nations seeking to buy aircraft. Other than that, they are worth nothing.

More & more & more jammers & countermeasures against missiles or in general against any missile that is smart...one thing you can't jam in RPG & one thing you can't jam & hard-hit is a cannon ball.
It seems that in WW1 every thing is stalemate because of those machine-guns no one dare get out of their trenches...then tank came to end this deadlock.
Such be the similar case with modern adversaries against US (if US leave Afghani/Iraqi/Libya forces aside). US plane will come & shoot missile at off-distance & their missile be jammed...then adversaries shoots & its missiles get dumbed...thus creating a stalemate!!

In the end plane will be stripped way from all its missiles (they are expensive) & will be left with good old non-jammable/beatable gun fire....only then I will reply to this:

Comparing a Prototype to a full fledged fifth gen jet is laughable, maybe when the Russians fix their economy they can actually have a good Jet, they only sell weapons for money and most of their weapons are obsolete, even the Chinese will have better weaponry then Russia if they don't fix their economy.

Comparing a Prototype to a full fledged fifth gen jet is laughable, maybe when the Russians fix their economy they can actually have a good Jet, they only sell weapons for money and most of their weapons are obsolete, even the Chinese will have better weaponry then Russia if they don't fix their economy.

The Russian economy is still very small 1.4 trillion compared to most of Europe, China, India, and even Brazil, their Defense industry is cash stripped at the moment, most of their engineers and Scientists go to Europe or the USA and their current Engineers are old in there 50's and 60's ,at this rate there going to need a bigger economy and invest more R&D.

First Russian economy is actually 1.465 trillion as of 2010, and it will be 1.8 trillion at the end of 2011 plus their economy is growing much faster compered to their Western counterparts. For example, powerhouse Germany only grew 0.2 % for the second quarter compered that to Russia's 3.4 % growth for the second quarter.

Not only money but technical expertise too are essential in defence market...no doubt Chinese will get Russian assistance in mega projects like their aircraft carrier.
