Iran's Salimi Titled World's Most Powerful Man in Olympics

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran's world champion Behdad Salimi Kordasiabi won a dramatic superheavyweight tussle with his countryman Sajjad Anoushiravani Hamlabad and Russia's Ruslan Albegov to clinch a deserved gold in the men +105kg in the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The 22-year-old hauled a snatch of 208kg and a clean and jerk of 247kg to set up a dramatic victory with 455kg at the Weightlifting competition at ExCeL.

Salimi's gold adds the Olympic title to the world crown he claimed in Paris last November, where he also pushed other world champions into second place.

Silver went to Sajjad Anoushiravani Hamlabad after a snatch of 204kg, a clean and jerk of 245kg and a total of 449kg.

Russia's Ruslan Albegov, who could have really piled the pressure on Salimi, took Bronze with a total of 448kg.

Such was the dominance of the leading duo who claimed Olympic gold and silver for one country, an unprecedented event in recent Olympics.

Iran's weightlifters Navab Nasirshelal and Kianoosh Rostami had also earlier earned silver and bronze medals in the London Games, respectively.

Salimi's medal was Iran's fourth gold in 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Watched his video. He was Awsome.

Do you think that has something to do with India not performing so well in the Olympics?

Just because a people have traditionally not done well in a certain sport, doesn't mean they can't.

Look at Sun Yang and Ye Shiwen. They are smashing multiple world records in a sport (swimming) that is traditionally dominated by Westerners.

Well no, why would I think so? I have already said it depends on training and subcontinent being pretty poor in present day can't spend much resource in sports. However with growing economic prosperity we are steadily securing our ground. We have assured of 4 medals in Olympics so far and finished second ahead of England in latest commonwealth game.

Well the fact is Iran's per capita income is lot higher than subcontinent, so I'm sure their athletes can afford more expensive training and diet while most Indian/Pakistani athletes are not professional to begin with. They work in Army, Railway etc and carry on with their training in spare time.

Please stop coming up with pseudo quack theory which relates strength, bravery with races and countries.

Just wondering. Yesterday, the member here called "aakash" was wondering why so many Northeast Indians were in the Indian Olympic delegation, and was wondering how East Asian types can perform better than normal Indians who are "Aryans". (His own words).

He asked how 800 million "Aryans" could possibly find it so hard to win Gold medals.

Never works for me, no idea why.

Well, maybe he was using the word in a different way from how it is normally used in English?

Normally it means Nordic Europeans in a racial sense, however the root of the word means Iranian if I remember correctly.

If Mongolians are supposed to be more agile then us Aryans are supposed to be strongly built and most superior? So it don't quite add up. does it? From the nation of over 800 million Aryans we are struggling to get 1 gold medal? Don't make sense. does it? Because, at the the end of the day it's on the athlete their temperament and the training that they go through.

Are there 800 million "Aryan speaker" in India?

North Eastern are hardy people because they live in mountainous regions. So their regular day to day activity is like heavy working out which increase their stamina. It's the reason of them having high representation in sports as India doesn't have an organized approach like China where people will be groomed for sports since they are 4 and 5 years old.

Silly! that you wonder about this .

The above is an argument based on wrong stereotype.

For instance one can argue: How come the Chinese didn't use Kung Fu when they were under attack by the Japanese.

In the above argument, the first misconcpetion is to assume all Chinese know Kung Fu, the second is about practicality of martial arts in WW2 era warfare.

aakash's statement (if ever mentioned by him) are based on same fallacies.

Its more to do with less popularity of cricket there, giving room for other sports.

Not Iranian. Persian.

Iranian would be Aryan, Semitic, Turk, Mongol, and even some African.

You"re giving too much attention.

His whole idea of bringing in the "Aryan" topic, was to raise a flame war between Indians and Iranian members.
