India should probably hold on to the celebration of scoring a crucial win in its bid for a Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) membership. According to a Bloomberg report, three diplomats who represent countries within the 48-nation group said Prime Minister Modi will need to wait a little bit longer to get into the elite club that controls trade in advanced nuclear technologies.

So, does that imply Switzerland 's backing for India 's entry to the top club means nothing? The diplomats, in the report, cite three big reasons to think so.

Admission criteria: That's right. The diplomats in the report claim India hasn't yet met all the criteria for admission and a delay could could roil Modi's grand plan to get into the nuclear mainstream. What's worse, this delay would push back a decision on Indian membership to later in the year, and risk bumping into the US presidential election.

Bomb worry: The diplomats say the terms of entry require more negotiating to preserve India's credibility of the trade controls. They want tighter monitoring by international nuclear inspectors as well as iron-clad assurances that Indian activities in its civilian nuclear program won't be used for military purposes.

Because NSG decisions are taken by consensus, a minority of members, especially China, could block India's bid to join. While the US has backed India's inclusion in the NSG, China is reportedly supporting Pakistan .

Pakistan: The diplomats say they're concerned that admitting India would weaken the rules for other non-recognized nuclear-weapons states to join. Pakistan has also submitted an application to join the NSG, according to the envoys.

John Kerry signaled that India would be willing to cooperate with Pakistan's application in his letter.

"With respect to other possible new members of the NSG, Indian officials have stated that India would take a merit-based approach to such applications and would not be influenced by extraneous regional issues," he wrote.

China's assertion that if the NSG countries make an exception for India, they should do the same for Pakistan , even though Islamabad has been caught selling nuclear weapons secrets to Libya and was named and shamed globally.

India's application for NSG will come up for review on June 9.

Simple no NSG membership, no US reactors. Other than china every one else is an excuse.

Not Pakistan, just a rouge scientist. Pakistan has learned for its mistakes, and according to international NGOs has a better control regime than India does.

This is nothing more than cherry picking.

As long as Pakistan doesn't get it, India will not either.

Not sure whether we can call this cherry picking, but according to your Najam Set hi US caught Pakistan selling centrifuges to North Korea in exchange for irbms. since Pakistan did not have credible delivery systems during 1990 this was done by none other than Benazir Bhutto

Well what I mean is it was not done by scientist but elected government and army and poor scientist was just a facilitator. Well US was considerate not to prosecute government but just an individual. I agree even Pakistan needs a way for survival even at the cost nuclear proliferation:)

I do not mind Pakistan selling them to make a living as long as they not drop one on India while in-transit.:D

unfortunately these bombs are meant for India.
US has bent the rules for Pakistan in 80s and 90s and now its our turn :D.

Mexico supports India's NSG membership, now the only country in the group who can stop India's entry is China.Either way its a diplomatic win for India.China not able to get even a single member country to support it in the group is huge.
Thats true even though it has the financial muscle its slowly getting isolated everywhere... Of course it has got good strategists... but China needs to do reality check and see if its fighting a loosing war or does the risks/isolation exceeds benefits.

we shall see that too sir... even without NSG, i bet the westinghouse Nuclear reactors will begin construction. Modi will see to that.

It would be interesting to see China vote against India's entry while all other members from the group votes in favour :coffee:

I'm afraid Modi is busy burning money as jet fuel for his pleasure trips across the world every month to care about the welfare of this people.

Modi saves more money than anyone else on the trips... do u know he schedules his meetings in the morning as soon as he gets out of the plane almost and prefers spending nights on plane travelling ?? in the last 4 days, he has attended 45 meetings in US, Mexico along with travelling... there was 32 hours of travel involved... he saves more money to us. getting the nuclear reactor deal done with westinghouse will save us millions now spent in coal imports etc., so we are content with his trips and so called burning of money.

btw if modi has to go to US, he will directly go to US.. there will be no stop in london like some state heads, where money is burning actually...

As for the Westinghouse nuclear reactors, NSG is inconsequential because India is covered with 1-2-3 agreement with the US. So no NSG also means US reactors for India.
