On the occasion of holy month of Ramadan, I chose this topic for the definition of Islamic Architecture, Through the publication of pictures of mosques from different countries of the world.
I'll start with pictures of the three most important mosques of the Muslims

Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem

Kindly take note of this fact:

Masjed Al-Sakrah - Gold Dome of the Rock, Above.
Was built in the time of Hazrat Umar (RA)', the second Kalifah, after the death of Prophet Muhammad [may the Peace and Blessings of Allah Most High be upon him]. Originally commissioned by Abdul Malik ibn Marwin, it was apparently completed by his son Al-Walid in 750 AD, and reconstructed by the khalif Al-Dhahir in 1033 AD.
Both Masjeds are Located in Jersulam, Palestine.​

Many muslims and Non muslims are publishing the wrong pictures of Masjid.e.Aqsa...

What was the original intended purpose of the minarets? Is it still relevant today? Can modern mosques do without this structure?

As well as providing a visual cue to a Muslim community, the main function of the minaret is to provide a vantage point from which the call to prayer is made. The call to prayer is issued five times each day: dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset, and night. In most modern mosques, the adhan is called from the musallah, or prayer hall, via microphone to a speaker system on the minaret. Minarets also function as air conditioning mechanisms: as the sun heats the dome, air is drawn in through open windows then up and out of the minaret, thereby providing natural ventilation.

What was the original intended purpose of the minarets? Is it still relevant today? Can modern mosques do without this structure?

There is no concept of minarets in Islam. It has been old traditions to build minarets so that the mo'azin (the one who calls for prayer) can stand and recite loudly as the loud speakers and other inventions did not take place by that time.

There are a lot of mosques with no minarets at all. It can be part of our Islamic history but not Islam. Look at this mosque for example.........
