Morrocco Showing interest in JF-17 ahead of Marrakech air show

Few things.

1: Nigeria is buying three Jf17b for training purposes first. They are demanding an enhanced ground strike Thunder aircraft.
Deliveries expected to start by mid of 2017. Nigeria paid 25 Million $ for first three aircrafts. They might place order for more by end of 2017.

2: Myanmar is buying one squadron (16 aircraft) for 560 Million $. Block 3 with AESA is their demand so deliveries will start after an year when first Block 3 will role out of production line.

3: Morocco, Qatar, Egypt are interested in Block 3. Instead of placing an order they first want to witness how much Block 3 of Jf17 offer. Egypt want to replace Mig21& MirageV. They are keeping an eye on both LCA and Jf17. Qatar want to replace Alpha Jet and Mirage F1 with new aircraft. Morocco can replace Alpha Jet with Jf17 or if they find Jf17 capabale enough they might replace their upgraded fleet of Mirage F1 and F5 Freedom fighter aircrafts.

4: Sri Lanka as per now will keep eye on both LCA and Jf17. Jf17 just scored extra points by getting deployed as Maritime aircraft with anti ship missile. But this is the deal which depends less on capability of jet but more on political game. If Sri Lankan government managed to repel Indian pressure then the deal for Sri Lankan Jf17 as Maritime aircraft can revive once again.

So over all despite of failed bids from Argentina or Malaysia, Jf17 can still manage to secure credible orders from various nations through out the World. Lack of Twin seat aircraft was a big short coming which will overcome by end of this year :-)

I am still not ready to rule out Sri Lanka and Malaysia. As for market well entire Africa is the market also countries in east Asia. Pakistan needs to market more aggressively

I Think that was the blunder by not developing dual seat since it was assumed that it will not be needed now paying the cost

Nigeria is on the right track by taking delivery of 3 JF-17 blk II which will be added by a few twin seat to fulfill the required numbers for training.

How ever if they are interested in getting JF-17 Block III then that would take more than 3 years to start the delivery. This also indicates that the Nigerian Air Force is looking at a large order.

2: Myanmar is buying one squadron (16 aircraft) for 560 Million $. Block 3 with AESA is their demand so deliveries will start after an year when first Block 3 will role out of production line.
The order is going to be very large hence the 16 aircraft order could be of the twin seat one so that the training can be done. This might be the only reason we have not seen any deliveries by now.

Morocco is very interested because they where having flying their F-16's due to finances till they entered the War between KSA and Yemen.

There was a report that one of their aircraft was also lost in this operation. KSA is going to finance a joint armed forces so things look positive. JF-17 offers many countries their own production capabilities which can be utilized for other Muslim Countries.
With the threat of US sanctions looming on those invading forces that started the conflict.

Sri Lanka wants the JF-17 but unfortunately till the Chinese projects start to bring fruit they can not go for these because the Indian govt. influence.

The order is going to be very small compared to others so it can be handled and deliveries can be expedited.

Argentina would probably come back to get the JF-17 in a few years time. Where as the Malaysian's would not because they require an aircraft that is duel engine.

The issue was PAF thought it is only a Training aircraft where as it can be used for precision attacks like shown by the US F-16 during the Gulf War 2.

Srilankans are not going for thunder and procuring tejas under Indian pressure.......By- the when the 1st aircraft to Nigeria and Myanmar will be delivered.....?????

Then Srilanka have to wait for at least five years to get first plane.

Looking at The Royal Moroccan, Air-force, they would benefit with Thunder. Noticing their air-force is quite out of sorts. New generation JF17 thunder would do them good.

Ideal package could be if I was presenting the deal to Morocco
  • 36 JF-17 Thunder (2 Squadrons) + Option for 1 Extra Squadron
  • 18 K8 Trainers
  • Support / Servicing deal
Hopefully after the deal they could perhaps retire their F-5 or just make them dedicated trainers

Lots of people here are mentioning Block-III, I think we must first let it evolve. To me, PAF is looking for Western Avionics for its own Block-IIIs with them on board, it will be interesting to see how PAF will market the same plane with Chinese avionics to other customers.

Azerbaijan, Myanmar and Nigeria will do fine with Block-2, their enemies aren't that well equipped.

Morocco will prefer Block-3. Simply put, Morocco's F-5s and Mirage F-1s were upgraded with a lot of the same kind of tech as the Block-2, so they'll be looking for a genuine capability jump. The next step is AESA, HMD/S and IRST, hence Block-3, which could be very affordable in comparison to other platforms with such subsystems.

It seems that Morocco is looking for 4-5 sqd's hence they might be going for block 3. The only problem that can be seen is would they be able to arrange the funds. A few years back they were unable to keep their F-16 in the air because of shortage of funds.
