Alongside a large order for 220 Abrams tanks, acquired refurbished from the United States under the U.S. Army’s Excess Defence Articles Program, Morocco’s armed forces are reportedly considering the acquisition of a dozen elite variants of the F-16 Fighting Falcon - known as the F-16V ‘Viper.’ The Moroccan Air Force received 24 F-16C fighters from 2011-2012, many of which were twin seat F-16D trainer variants, and the Fighting Falcon today forms the mainstay of the country’s aerial warfare capabilities. The North African kingdom also fields a sizeable fleet of F-5E Tiger twin engine light fighters, a platform dating back to the Vietnam War which has since been extensively upgraded and is prized for its versatility and extremely low maintenance requirements.

First unveiled in 2012, the F-16V has been marketed to a number of the United States’ third world allies as a relatively inexpensive and light platform which integrates a number of high end technologies - namely advanced electronic warfare capabilities and a powerful AESA radar. Use of this type of radar allows the fighters to operate with a minimal radar signature, much as stealth fighters such as the American F-22 Raptor and Chinese J-20 do, which significantly improves their survivability in beyond visual range engagements. Old F-16 variants, including the F-16A which first entered service in 1978, can also be upgraded to the F-16V standard with the installation of new avionics.

Should Morocco proceed to acquire the 12 F-16V jets planned, its air force could well field the very first AESA radar equipped jets on the African continent - depending on when Egypt's costly Rafale fighters themselves reach full operational capability. Plans to acquire the F-16V come at a time when Morocco is reportedly also showing interest in acquiring S-400 surface to air missile batteries from Russia, though the United States has since applied considerable pressure to its allies not to make purchases of high end Russian weapons systems which is likely to seriously impede a potential acquisition. With Moroccan arms acquisitions largely made with preparations for conflict with neighbouring Algeria in mind, the ability of the F-16V to engage the elite fighters of the Algerian Air Force remains in serious question. The Vipers’ considerably quieter radar is a considerable asset in their favour, though they are otherwise outmatched in all fields by Algeria’s elite twin engine air superiority fighters - the Su-30MKA - which fly higher and are more heavily armed, faster, more manoeuvrable than the F-16 - while retaining a considerably longer air to air engagement range. Nevertheless, acquiring the Vipers will considerably strengthen Moroccan aerial warfare capabilities and provide a relatively cost effective means of modernising the country’s fleet.

finally the Algerian Flankers will have some amuse gueule...

Its good but comes with a lot of headaches due to origin nation,s politics

. . .
why they need it .
for show and tell...and country pride..other than that, they will be no use against Spain and certainly not against Algeria and the Sahrawis have a better air defence than Morocco's..

to keep people like ceylal in check
:rofl::rofl::rofl:
even against Ceylal they need more than that to keep him at bay...:usflag::usflag:

Freakin don't do it not united states. See what happened to iraq, libya and iran they were elite muslim nations to hold state of the art american equipment .

Americans turned around and made them into enemy targets.

Someone should advise them to purchase from france or china or even russia. F fucking 16 40 year old aircraft with V as in aesa upgrade **** that they would even be good if they got a block III jf 17 gives the same capabilities with half the price.

If they have the money why not go for some serious machines like Rafales or Su-35 or Mig-35 even. F-16 in 2018 onwards is a no no. Unless u want to use them as lower tier back bone of airforce to do not so intensive tasks. Like JF 17 , does for pakistan or tejas does for india or J-10 does for china.

F-16s are lame post 2020 period.

funny fact F-5 Tiger III is better than JF-17 and algerian garbage MIG-29:omghaha:

.
Honestly , Morocco needs an airplane more oriented for bombing ground targets , those F-16 are not suitable for what they face right now .

. . .
Morocco and Algeria should unify and build an African superstate.
Hard to accomplish due to an idiotic rivalry etween Governments..The UMA was killed by Morocco...and Kaddaffy...

. .
funny fact F-5 Tiger III is better than JF-17 and algerian garbage MIG-29:omghaha:

The Mig 29 is garbage...compared to which aircraft in the Moroccan arsenal? The F5, Mirage or F16? The most recent one that was dusted, freshly painted from the Arizona desert and delivered to Morocco with all the hoopla and with a hollywooding advertisement of its capabilities and embarked sophisticated electronic suite..couldn’t stand to a Houthi strella..and then the word found out that the much glorified Moroccan F16 was just a basing Chevy..with a seat and a rudder..The F16 V wether it is bloc 70 or 155..delivered to Morocco will just another Chevy...They will be no use against the Polisario air defenses..
For the Algerian Mig 29s...is one of the very best flying in the world , well equipped second to none and flown by the very best...

The One the Houthis downed has those too, per Moroccan idiots claims..didn’t stand a manpad..
Sometimes you forgot that Morocco is piss poor and gadget like that cost money to possess and to maintain..but it is good to dream..dreams are free..
