Morocco Severs Ties with Iran over its Support to Polisario

Morocco cut its diplomatic ties with Iran on Tuesday over its involvement in the armament of the Polisario Front.

Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita accused Tehran of supplying Polisario with weapons through the Lebanese “Hezbollah” group.

He told reporters that "a first shipment of weapons was recently" sent to thePolisario Front, which is seeking independence, via an "element" at the Iranian embassy in Algiers.

He said that Iran and “Hezbollah” were supporting Polisario by training and arming its fighters, via the Iranian embassy in Algeria.

"Hezbollah sent military officials to Polisario and provided the front with ... weapons and trained them on urban warfare," Bourita said.

He was speaking upon his return from Tehran, where he said he informed his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif about Morocco's decision. Rabat soon will shut its embassy in Tehran.

Soon after the announcement, Bahrain announced its strong support of Morocco’s decision.

United Arab Emirates Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr. Anwar Gargash said: “We support Morocco in its stand against Iran’s meddling in its affairs.”

The Polisario and Morocco fought for control of Western Sahara from 1975 to 1991, with Rabat taking over the desert territory before a UN-brokered ceasefire in the former Spanish colony.

Rabat considers Western Sahara an integral part of Morocco and proposes autonomy for the resource-rich territory, but the Polisario Front insists on a UN referendum on independence.

On Friday the UN Security Council backed a US-drafted resolution that urges Morocco and the Polisario Front to prepare for talks on settling the decades-old conflict.

It also renewed for six months the mandate of a UN mission that has been monitoring the ceasefire in Western Sahara since 1991.

Diplomatic efforts to end the conflict have been deadlocked since the last round of UN-sponsored talks in 2008.

Morocco maintains that negotiations on a settlement should focus on its proposal for autonomy for Western Sahara and rejects the Polisario's insistence on an independence referendum.

Morocco didnt choose to follow Saudie Arabia and upholds it ties with Qatar. If Morocco was to be a puppet it wouldve followed the Saudis and cut its ties with Qatar.

Now in this Hezbollah - Polisario case Morocco has made its own decision. As a matter of fact Morocco has backed up its claims with hard proof. Hezbollah did provide weapons and training for polisario.. And this ofcourse happened with the approval of Iran.

Morocco acted in its own national security interest. Providing surface to air missiles to an enemy is no small thing. I know that the Algerians are pissed of on this forum, because they know they are backing polisario and they know polisario doesnt stand the slightest of chance against Morocco. They wouldnt even be able to get past the defence wall anyway.. Not to mention the fact that Morocco has one of the best desert armies in the world. I know that the Iranians in this forum are pissed off as well, because this is a clear example of the aggressive Iranian regime meddling in other countries affairs by using proxies (which is not a good thing).

Anyway I would just wish all muslims anywhere in the world could live in peace and harmony with one another.

Why Polisario needs Iran’s help, when he has the best shoulder he can count on rain or shine..The arms they accused Iran giving the Polisario doesn’t even exist in the Iranian arsenal. Polisario always had, strellas Sam6’s and Sam 11’s..and why the Polisario needs to learn how to dig tunnels, when he can bypass easily the Moroccan sand barrières..Germsins did it against the Maginot line,The US did it in Irak, and for the Polisario , the Moroccan wall is a piece of cake...

Those weapons that Morocco accuses Iran giving to Polisario exited in their arsenal since the 80’s..For Hizbollah training he Polisario, it is the Hizbollah that need to be trained by the Polisario..The SADR has a full fledged capable army that has shown again and again her capabilities..
