The number of Vietnamese travelers to Japan has soared strongly, with an estimated 300,000 arrivals in all of 2017, up a staggering 30% year-on-year, the Japanese consul general in HCMC said yesterday.

This robust growth rate builds on the momentum recorded in recent years, as last year also witnessed around 234,000 Vietnamese visiting the Northeast Asian nation, up a strong 26% against 2015, Kawaue Junichi said at the opening of a representative office of Japan’s Hankyu Travel International Co Ltd yesterday.

The Japanese government has placed Vietnam among 20 key source markets for tourism since 2015, and has relaxed its visa policy for Vietnamese tourists to Japan. The Japanese government is trying to prop up its tourism sector, said Consul General Kawaue Junichi.

He noted 2018 marks the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Japan. Therefore, the two governments will hold the largest-ever Vietnamese-Japanese festival on January 27 and 28. Besides, many other events will take place throughout the year to promote cultural exchanges and bolster the growth of the tourism sector.

Dozens of tour operators took part in the opening ceremony yesterday. Notably, many companies asked questions on services and support in obtaining visas for their customers.

Tetsuo Nakayama, managing director of Hankyu Travel International, said Vietnam has emerged as a key visitor-generating market for Japan. Especially, tourists’ needs are diverse, from normal tours to incentive programs.

In addition to the opening of the new office, Nakayama said, the company has teamed up with local travel company Discover the World Vietnam to offer services for other tour operators. He said the two companies provide package tour services at competitive prices. They have worked with the Japanese Consulate General in a bid to make it easier for tour operators to get visas for their customers.

Early this year, the Japan Tourism Agency and the Japan National Tourism Organization struck a memorandum of understanding with the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism to promote tourism cooperation between the two countries. The two sides expect Japanese arrivals in Vietnam to hit one million by 2018, and the number of Vietnamese tourists to Japan to reach half a million by then.

from the news: the Japanese have apparently agreed to allow more Vietnamese to seek jobs and establish businesses in Japan. It is expected the number of Vietnamese working and living in Japan will surpass those in South Korea and Taiwan. win win for everybody.

The future is China, not Japan. There is almost nothing to be proud in Japanese industries except for a few cars. When car is dead, Japan will be a poor country,

has Japan been ever a poor country? the country has more than cars. you forget HSR, electronics, military industry and... famous sushi. we have pho. win win. the japanese´ biggest enemy: old and shrinking population. one day they will realize the only chance to survive is opening the country for foreigners. they belong to first world, while we ahem... just escaped the third poor world. sure, China is great and belongs the future, but it is too risky for us to get too close. we don´t trust them too much.

Yes I know, summer tends to be hot but that is why the people love it. Hot not as cold as in winter. Ha ha. Ok I give you a tip: as holiday destination you can pick VN instead of JP. How’s about this island in the gulf of Thailand? Phu Quoc. Not too far from China mainland.

Better more interaction with China instead of Japan.

There is zero chance that JP " is opening the country for foreigners". Yes, ZERO chance, if I have to repeat.

China is your future, in long term.
But it is pity a fact that Vietnamese people are educated and brainwashed to hate China, just like Chinese be educated and led to hate Japan. Sigh.

Sure not. Both educated to dislike CN but in different characteristics in their words.

we will see. Vietnam and Japan have just agreed to go ahead with Tpp-11, with March as date for conclude the pact. JP is forced to open the domestic market. the japanese market is especially lucrative for our farm produces. but ok no problem, China can show she seriously supports Vietnam way to prosperity. you establish a China/Vietnam economy corridor with investment of lets say $50 billion, similar to the sum, China wants to invest in Pakistan, but without resorting to tricks as we have seen in Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Definitely looks like a good destination to me.

I look forward to visiting Vietnam along with a few other Asian countries in the near future.

the island is very popular among Vietnamese holidaymakers, most foreigners don´t know them. lots of high-priced hotels are coming up. billions of dollars are poured in. I expect in 10 years the island will compete with Singapore as most favorite destination.

I am curious about how a Vietnam name may be adapted to Japanese one. Japan requires all immigrants who become Japanese citizens to adopt Japanese name. I wonder how a popular Vietnam last name, say Nguyen, may be adapted to a Japanese last name. :)
