ISLAMABAD: Law-enforcement agencies in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) have rounded up more than 8,000 suspects in a fresh crackdown against militants, official documents revealed, as the province takes the lead in the implementation of the National Action Plan against Terrorism.

According to the documents – which the K-P government submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office on Wednesday – some 8,281 suspects have been arrested in 2,861 fresh operations. These include 22 clerics accused of delivering hateful speeches. The K-P government has also charged the representatives of some 222 seminaries with violating loudspeaker laws.

In comparison, the Punjab government has added the names of more than 2,000 suspects to the new list of terrorists, informed officials told The Express Tribune. They added the Sindh government has placed the names of 500 suspects on the list, the Balochistan government has identified 410 suspects, authorities in Islamabad have named 150 suspects and Gilgit-Baltistan has named 50 suspects.

As part of its efforts to implement the National Action Plan, the K-P government has identified over 90 terrorist cases which are to be transferred to military courts and has allocated Rs760 million for the recovery of 615 ‘deadly’ terrorists who have been declared absconders, the documents revealed.

Authorities in the province have set up a counter-terrorist force with the induction of 1,760 personnel who will be deployed at seven new police stations. They have also deployed 24 new law enforcement units, comprising 1,200 personnel in total, in 12 sensitive districts. Some 1,323 additional personnel have been inducted in the prison security force, the documents said.

The K-P government has asked the federal government to return 230 platoons of the Frontier Constabulary. It has also issued three ordinances and held one meeting of the apex committee to implement the NAP. These are the K-P Sensitive and Vulnerable Establishments and Places (Security) Act 2015, the K-P Restriction of Rented Buildings (Security) Act 2014 and the K-P Hotel Restrictions (Security) Act 2014. The province also sought Rs4 billion from the finance ministry for enhancing security of public sector universities operating under the Higher Education Commission.

. . . .
What are they planning on doing with all these arrested people. Even today they rounded up close to 200 people from punjab. Mostly on hate speech charges or selling hate filled material.

These aren't significant charges. Yes, these people are dangerous but once again what kind of punishment is in order for them?

We kniw they cant and won't hang them. If they just wanna leave them in limbo for a while and then cut them loose then these men are gonna come out with a greater vengeance. The state is treading on very thin ice with these large number of ppl arrested and having no idea what to do with them.

.
And they didn't do this before because?? Does it take children to die. KPK govt is a failure.

More than 8000?!? Woah....

Damn, huge numbers. At first I thought it must be more than 200,000+ terrorists around. Very long way to go. :(

Is that right? @Horus
Long way I bet but it will be done--only option.

KPK is a front for WOT, to think for a decade nothing has been done to get to the grass roots of terrorism is beyond ridiculous. I was hoping Imran would come in and get to work but its been 2 years and nothings been done. Worst still he has distanced himself from the army. He could have used the army to conduct operations in KPK as a short term measure.

Who has had KPK before PTI?

It is good to see that terrorists are being rounded up and are being made ineffective. This really is the need of the hour. No one can deny that 12/16 APS attack has been a turning point. More efforts are being made to bring the enemy and their supporters to justice. This should be a clear signal for all: if you support terrorists in any form you will not be spared. In the last few weeks we have seen that the security forces have taken proactive actions and arrested terrorists and their supporters not only in KP, but from Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi as well. Terrorists have no place to hide. President Obama recently in his State of the Union said, “We stand united with people around the world who’ve been targeted by terrorists – from a school in Pakistan to the streets of Paris,” He vowed “We will continue to hunt down terrorists and dismantle their networks.”

How can you arrest 8200 terrorists ? Probably the usual suspects and innocent people arrested by Police to show they are doing their job. What a joke !
