WASHINGTON (Reuters) - More than 1,000 Chinese researchers have left the United States amid a U.S. crackdown on alleged technology theft, top U.S. security officials said on Wednesday, adding that Chinese agents had already been targeting the incoming Biden administration.

John Demers, chief of the U.S. Justice Department's National Security Division, told a discussion hosted by the Aspen Institute think tank the researchers had left the country while the department launched multiple criminal cases against Chinese operatives for industrial and technological espionage.

A Justice Department official said they were a different group to those mentioned by the State Department in September, when it said the United States had revoked visas for more than 1,000 Chinese nationals under a presidential measure denying entry to students and researchers deemed security risks.

The official said the researchers Demers referred to, who U.S. authorities believed were affiliated with China's People's Liberation Army, fled the United States after the FBI conducted interviews in more than 20 cities and the State Department closed China’s Houston consulate in July.

"Only the Chinese have the resources and ability and will" to engage in the breadth of foreign influence activity that U.S. agencies have seen in recent years, Demers said.

William Evanina, chief of the counterintelligence branch of the office of the U.S. Director of National Intelligence, told the same event Chinese agents were already targeting personnel of the incoming administration of President-elect Joe Biden, as well as "people close" to Biden's team.

He did not elaborate.

Evanina said Chinese researchers in the United States who were under scrutiny of U.S. agencies were "all coming here at the behest of the Chinese government."

China described the visa crackdown earlier this year as "naked" political persecution and racial discrimination that seriously violated human rights.

Sino-U.S. relations have deteriorated to their worst in decades during outgoing U.S. President Donald Trump's tenure with disputes simmering over issues from trade and technology to Hong Kong and the coronavirus.

It’s great seeing the US annihilate Chinese spy networks.

. . .
Excellent, now these great scientists can come back to build a much stronger China. Thanks again Trump, a one-term president.

These were Chinese spies sent to steal American science and technological know how. Now these spy networks are being annihilated. It's indeed a great day.

. .
lol American damage control narrative for internal consumption, after number of researchers coming to and staying in this regressing and unstable country dropped hard, since it doesnt offer enough opportunities anymore that make it worth abondoning homeland and principles and being treated and exploited as third class citizens

Good news.

First of all, as Somsak says, the US is not safe due to high prevalance of virus.

Second, as a developing country with ever increasing R&D spending, China needs all available talent power.

Who says the US is a bad hegemon? They are actually sending over people back to China -- and even without suing them for what they have done.

Such magnanimity.

Trump is good and I understand why Indians worhsip him.

LOL... Look at these so call Chinese spies of American. If they left US, US will be nothing and now US is shooting its own foot. Imagine China itself already has a pool of talent and join forces with these so called American chased out by white American.

China has been trying for a long time to lure top Chinese researchers back to China from foreign countries.

This will accelerate Chinese technology development, not slow it down.

Many engineers working for US EDA software companies are Chinese and are now leaving those companies to help China accelerate EDA development.

US has for a long time taken the top talent of other countries using the lure of high salaries and in turn they have developed advanced technologies for the US.

This is a big gain for China.

The fact US actually thinks this damages China is the funny part

They can't sue because there is no evidence. Just Trump making up things like him winning the 2020 election.

American are falling for China plan. They plan to derived the white American of Chinese talent. By creating xenophobic, American can no longer used Chinese in critical research while very likely these talent will come back to China and even give China a massive boast that will leave US in dust.

America will soon kick out talent like Li Fei Fei or ban her from critical research for US. Thank you America and idiots like @F-22Raptor for shooting their own foot. :enjoy:
