Srinagar: If you think the onion prices are leaving you teary eyed then be prepared for more tears. Citing the steady rise in the domestic prices in the face of massive demand from India, Pakistan has stopped sending onions into J-K through the twin cross-LoC bartering points in Poonch and Uri.
According to media reports, the traders have been informed by the Pakistani side that due to steady rise in domestic prices in the face of massive demand from India, the other side cant supply the product for some time.
A leading cross LoC trader in Uri, Bashir Ahmad told media that the Pakistani side gave them information that the onion produce cannot be bartered.
He said that this is mainly due to increase in the prices in their own domestic market.
The news has shocked all the traders as they had placed bulk orders due to the soaring onion prices in India.
Ahmad said that they had placed orders for onions from *** but the massive demand made onion prices in Pakistan jump from Rs 22 per kilo to Rs 38 in three days.
He added that they had imported around 100 trucks in two days which must be around 1,000 tonnes.
Pakistani onion imports through LoC may not be a huge relief to the surging Indian demand, but it would have helped Kashmir manage its needs comparatively cheap.
