More Rocket Power ordered for Indian Army

I heard a rumour that the IA had tested TATA and Ashoka Leyland vehicles as launchers for the Pinka last year. With TATRA no out of the picture the local players are going to make some serious cash of this and other deals where TATR Was once used.

TATA yes, but not so sure about Ashok Leyland.

Yes I'd be much more in favour of TATA, AL don't have the kind of quality products the IA desires. TATA is able to bring in expertise from its subsidiaries and partners like DAEWOO.

I hope TATA or M&M gets the contract
But why was the army is importing simple thing like trucks from outside

Some generals unfortunately let the money speak. Gladly VK Singh got the truth out. The same is going on against Arjun tanks.

i guess lot of you get the money part wrongly.. a rocket alone will not be the total price.. it includes everything... it is the final price to induct ... which means production of rocket, computers, support system, training etc etc...

Logically it would be irritating to ask money separately.. so project manager at both sides( army& gov, vendor) will actually work out on this before finalizing the final expenditure. This money will be paid in parts (e.g) ... deliver the first lot get 500 crores in first year, second 500 crore for second year (etc) .. so the budget for the defence will be done accordingly by the govt every year..Money will not be allocated or paid afront.. Same applies to MMRCA deal... the budget amount will not be allocated afront.. over the years the amount will be allocated by the govt

The trucks it imports are high-performance heavy trucks and these imported trucks are only used for specfic specialised purposes like Bhramos transporter/launcher, Prahaar launcher, Pinka launcher etc which number only 10-12,000 out of the 150-200,000 tricks in service with the IA. The reason being that in the past the likes of TATA,AL and M&M didn't make trucks powerful enough with the off-roading prowess of the foreign tricks like TATRA or VOLVO. It is a very recent phenomenon that Indian truck makers have been able to manufacture the kind if quality and power the IA is after for these specialised roles.

It is more to do with the short-comings of domestic truck makers until recently like I have said.

Let me add something to the above information. When trucks like the TATRAS were first imported in to India in the early 1970s; they were trucks with very hi-power, turbo-charged diesels which in fact could be run on multi-fuels. They were AWD (8x8)in case of the TATRAS with very high ground clearance and with 'central tyre inflation' systems; where the tyre pressure could be adjusted from the driving cabs for different requirements and with extremely heavy-duty gear boxes and transfer cases and multiple gear choices including very hi-torque 'crawler gear ratios'. The first TATRAS were prime movers for Tank transporters while URAL trucks came as FATs for the large Arty towed guns. At that time, the TATAs made the only AWD Truck in India for the Army which was the 1210SD 4x4 models and OFB made the Shaktimans which had MAN engines. When the need for hi-power transporters increased then TATA and AL developed Heavy Duty Trucks progressively of higher payloads. TATAs investment stake in Cummins Engines helped to develop both higher power engines and Turbo-Chargers.
That lacunae has been covered now.

This was pretty much what I was trying to say!

There are other two types of warheads used by Pinaka II which we don't know about yet.

Other Pakistani clowns must realize that this system is much better than the BM-21 version which they have been bragging about[surprisingly carrying only 30 rockets as compared with original BM-21 in service with IA which carries 40 122mm rockets].

We have suffered quality control issues within our products from DRDO and the reports of CAG highlight this.
Can we expect similar issues from Pinaka?

I have a relative working in a senior research position and he praises BEL for having implemented total ISO certifications within their organization. In comparision we continue to hear from CAG reports about the laclustre performance of DRDO especially in regards to meeting targets.

I have also heard praise of HAL products as compared to DRDO even though the organizations are co-dependant. If you are in the defence industry would you comment on this?
