More Indians trust their Government even as world over trust in governments falls

According to an article published in the Harvard Business Review (HBR), the world we currently live in is facing a serious trust deficit. Quoting a survey by Edelman, a multi-national communications firm, the article said that this was the first time in 17 years that the survey had found a decline in trust across all institutions.

Edelman uses four institutions to measure the level of public trust, and these are – Government, Media, NGOs, and Businesses. Their survey was done in 28 countries including India, and in almost two-thirds of them, ‘the general population did not trust the four institutions to “do what is right” — the average level of trust in all four institutions combined was below 50%’ – the article in HBR said.

However, what could come as good news for the Government of India, India bucked this trend and the trust in government actually saw a significant gain of 10% over the last year.

According to the Edelman survey, 75% of the general population of India trusted the government while globally this average was just 41%. The survey was carried out between October 13 and November 16 last year.

During 2013 and 2014, when the then UPA government was rocked by allegations of massive scams, this trust in government of India was at 57% and 53% respectively.

The government of India was the second biggest gainer in trust in 2016, if the survey findings are to be believed.

The biggest loser, globally, was the media that was almost as distrusted as the governments world over. Media took the biggest year-on-year hit and is now distrusted by the majority in 82% of the surveyed countries.

“People now view media as part of the elite,” Richard Edelman, president of the firm that did the survey, was quoted by Quartz while explaining this lack of trust in the media.

very interesting. i thought demonetization fiasco would cause govt image to go down but it doesn't seem so.
in Pakistan neither govt nor media or businesses are trusted. by and large the only unifying factor is the army, but I guess it's the same in India as well when it comes to military.

No. Indian army is respected and honoured for their will, strength and sacrifices, but it not at all a major unifying force. The major unifying force remain the constitution and the institutions it empowers.

You must see this in perspective of impressive ranking gains India has done under Modi in most indices. Competitiveness index, we jumped 32 places in two years.

Even most of Modis detractors do not question his hard work and honesty, they question his politics.

And you are totally wrong about Indian army. Respected yes, for their sacrifices. But unifying force????? Does not even come up as one of the factors. It's a Govt department dude, sheesh!

Unless you meant Pakistan army. Then yes it does have some unifying value for us lol!

Army is absent in political discourse in India. But the army is highly revered.

China is the highest as usual.

There is definitely a correlation, the more that foreign countries dislike the Chinese government, the more that the Chinese people like the Chinese government. Because that would mean that our government is looking after Chinese interests first, not foreign ones.

Now if foreign countries started loving the Chinese government... then people would think that something is seriously wrong.

Probably the easiest way to destabilize China, would be if all of the foreign governments (especially China's rivals) started praising the Chinese government. Funny how they never clocked on to this simple correlation.

No. Indian army is respected and honoured for their will, strength and sacrifices, but it not at all a major unifying force. The major unifying force remain the constitution and the institutions it empowers.

The unified force in India is English language, it's British government system and the caste system.

Nothing in India is in Majority. Not language, not religion, not race, not culture. We are a Union of states that have common overlap. Imagine a N (each set representing a state) set venn diagram, with no universal intersection but significant 2(NC2) or 3(NC3) set intersection.

You should some day visit India. You can visit any urban centre. However any Sub-Urban or rural area will give you a stark clear picture. Try to make it in any of the southern states if possible. They rely almost entirely on their regional language( Lingual Identity is very strong there).

You might not like India but try and visit. Hey what are we here for if not for the quest of knowledge.

That's why it's so stupid to play the "Tibet card", or "Taiwan card" against China. Better stick to "freedom" or "democracy", which has worked really, really well:pleasantry:
