22 militants among 24 killed in Mohmand blitz

GHALLANAI: Twenty-two militants, including several local commanders, and two civilians were killed and several others sustained injuries as fighter planes and gunship helicopters blitzed different areas of Pandyalai and Lakaro Tehsils of the troubled Mohmand Agency on Tuesday. A press release of the Frontier Corps, however, claimed killing 60 militants in the ongoing operation besides securing a number of militant-held areas.
Sources said fighter planes and gunship helicopters heavily bombed a seminary, Jamia Madrassa Shuhada-e-Dwezai, in Shata Kandao area of Pandyalai Tehsil, leaving 12 militants dead and several others injured.
Similarly, 10 more militants and two civilians were killed and 12 others sustained injuries when jet planes and gunship helicopters pounded suspected hideouts of insurgents in Qandaro area of Lakaro Tehsil and Danishkol and Dwezai areas of Pandyalai Tehsil.
The two civilians, who were killed in the airstrikes, were identified as Saddam and Taqsimullah Jan of Danishkol, while the names of 12 wounded persons could not be ascertained. The injured were rushed to Peshawar hospitals.
The sources added that security forces also hit positions of militants in Mulakhel and Karair areas in Safi. However, there was no word on casualties. Meanwhile, security forces, backed by tanks and gunship helicopters, continued their advance and reached Lakaro Tehsil checkpoint.
On way to the check-post, security forces bulldozed 24 houses and torched 50 others on roadsides in Sandokhel, Amrai Koroona, Kamalkhel Koroona and Habibzai areas. It may be mentioned here that earlier security forces had destroyed 48 houses of the suspected militants.
The sources said that Frontier Corps Inspector General Major General Tariq Khan paid a surprise visit to the troubled tribal agency, where he was briefed on the ongoing operation. The visit was kept secret from the media due to volatile security situation in the area.
Meanwhile, a press release of the paramilitary Frontier Corps said that troops advanced and secured Darwazgai-Lakrao-Mamad Gatt Road. In the process, militant strongholds of Habibzai and Mulakhel were destroyed.
It added that 60 hardcore militants, including several commanders identified as Umar Khitab, Qari Mumtaz, Haroon Rashid, Bilal, Yaqub, Yar Said, Yusuf and Hamza, had been killed in the two-day operation. Also militant strongholds of Karair and Chingal were targeted.
AFP Adds: A paramilitary official claimed that 60 militants had been killed Mohmand in the Agency during the last 24 hours.
In this operation, 60 hardcore militants were killed during the last 24 hours, including major militant commanders, the official told AFP. Thirty-eight militants were killed today (Tuesday) and 22 yesterday (Monday), he said. Another paramilitary official said 40 militants were killed on Tuesday, when war planes, helicopter gunships and ground artillery hammered the offensive.
