The developments in Cairo suggest, as corroborated by the reaction of Brotherhood, that Nobel Laureate and diplomat Mohammed ElBaradei could be the next president of Egypt. Minutes before militarys deadline, Muslim Brotherhood spokesman Gehad El-Haddad told the media that the military was trying to impose Mohammed ElBaradei as a unity figure. He confirmed that the Brotherhood's political wing, the Freedom and Justice Party, rejected a meeting with ElBaradei and the head of the army General Sisi.
Who is ElBaradei and why would military attempt to install him to replace popularly elected president Morsi who was seen as a symbol of hope after the dictatorial regime of Hosni Mubarak? ElBaradei came to limelight when Iraq was accused by the US of possessing weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and he as director general of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was tasked by the UN to inspect Iraqi nuclear arsenal. He reported to the UN that the documents purporting Iraq to be a rogue state with WMD were not authentic. He was widely respected for his integrity. He was awarded Nobel Peace Award in recognition of his services. Similarly, he did not tow the US line on Irans nuclear program.
ElBaradei joined his compatriots for democratic change in Egypt in 2009 and was a significant leader during the recent protests. He is an eye-sore for the U.S. government and supports some policies that do not support current U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East. He has the distinction of calling for international criminal investigation of former Bush administration officials for their roles in planning the war on Iraq. If ElBaradei is indeed a probable replace of Morsi, this would suggest that the Obama administration is backing militarys so-called road map because Americans have been lobbying for him to become prime minister in Morsi government.
