India exports so much rice, how come the country still has hunger problem?
That is indeed a good question. Even Most Indians do not ask this question and are totally ignorant about the real reasons.
The real reason for Malnutrition in India is not poverty.
These are the 3 primary reason for malnutrition in India.
1. Poor dietary habits. Habits molded by famine, poverty and shortage. Most Indians are unaware of the real dietary requirements of their children.
2. Poor status of women in households. This compounded with reason 1, results in only 1 in 10 child get adequately fed during their initial years. Especially during their first 2 years after birth. IF this wasn't bad enough, add illiteracy of the mother to this mix and you have a guarantee for disaster.
3. Poor service delivery system.
Only slightly more than 50% of household in India have access to pipe water in their homes. And even then there is no water running in those pipes 24x7.
Since women are responsible for collecting water, they have little time to focus on children's health and education.
But as you can see from the posts here, most Indians are unaware of the real problem and this ensures that practical soutions are never implemented.
