I am not sure it is some sudden 'bonhomie'; at best a tentative 'thaw'. I believe Pakistan's own star has risen considerably since the lows of 2013 (and before). There are unmistakable gains in economy, security, and even international relations. CPEC came as another major boost. The defeat of Imran Khan's agitation in 2014 gave a big boost to Pakistan's stability and political credentials.

And it is several years since the Mumbai massacre--so enough water has flowed under the bridges of Ravi (and Ganges)...

Maybe there is some 'track two' diplomacy, trying to pick up where Musharraf-Manmohan left off about a decade ago.

In short, had Pakistan not turned a corner there wouldn't be this visit. Still a most welcome thaw.

I am not sure however i kind of like this Modi tactic...It seems when it comes to India Pak surprise is his biggest weapon...be is oath ceremony, drawing new red lines, surprise meetings and now this....probably based on feedback from previous engagements he would have concluded that it is best to keep media our of Indo-pak equation...either they will work as war mongers or will raise so much expectations that all talks seems to fail....just a guess though...what say??

totally agree with you point about Media, last meeting that was schedule to happen in India between foreign ministers was cancelled because Media hyped the issue so much. Plus Modi loves to delegate things to his trusted deputies, Doval, Sushma and Jaishankar will handle things on their level. Modi will keep on pulling such surprises on Media.

Do you have to bring this drama in here? You think the Pakistanis will forget their children from Peshawer? Or RAW's terroists in Karachi or Baluhcistan?

People like you on both sides are what don't want to move forward with peace. The Europeans hated each other, till they realized what they can be, if they joined hands. That's what's going on here. Start looking at 2016 and let go of 2008 or 2014 for some Pakistanis. There are more prosperous days ahead for both the nations if these relationships continue to foster. You owe it to your next generations to give them a peaceful region where you are at peace, open trade and tourism with your neighbor. Otherwise, one day, a nuke war will erupt and the entire region will suffer, and the same India won't be a power no more and Pakistan will probably not exist. So either these relationships, peace and trade is better, or sooner or later, you guys will fight one war, that'll ruin both of you.

Support peace and stability, the region can go far. This region has a lot of talent that can change the world.
