Should make the traditional issues with the Fin Min and MoD less apparent. But tbh I think the MoD is something that needs/deserves a dedicated minister. I'm all for smaller cabinets but as long as all the ministries get proper oversight.

Sure, but is that a wise decision? I share the opinion of @Contrarian, that with his focus on development of India, he should had chosen a different ministy. Also there is a reason why you normally keep the forces under the President and the PM away from them, with another minster responsible for the MoD, to not have interference of responsibility in war times or similar and not put too much power in one hand only!
Btw, doesn't this also show the lack of confidence of Modi, that he didn't found any other person that according to him could do the job?
