With Prime Minister Narendra Modi deciding to not take the media along with him to Brazil for the BRICS Summit mid-July, it could be curtains down for the well-established practice of Premiers travelling with a large contingent from the Fourth Estate.

Only representatives of the government media and wire services are likely to accompany the Prime Minister.

Usually over 30 journalists travel with the Prime Minister, President and Vice-President on Air India One, the special aircraft for VVIPs which has an entire enclosure for the Press.

While the media does not pay for the airfare, board and lodging at the destination is paid by them.

Over the years — particularly during the Manmohan Singh era — the return flight provided an opportunity to the Press to interact with the otherwise media-shy former Premier.

The on-board press conferences used to be free-wheeling with questions ranging from the visit to domestic politics and economic policy.

Just shows that he is not publicity hungry .

Just wants to do his job without fanfare.

He (his party and strategists) used media when it was needed.... But when Manmohan did this, we criticized him right???

Isnt this what life & politics is all about ?

' You give me the man.. and I'll give you the rule'.

I get a feeling that, Modi is going in the same direction of MMS, the difference here is, He has more power and control over his government... He is kind of tough as a leader.....Otherwise i see this government as a old one in a new bottle.....

All Govts are Old wine in new bottles.

Only this time the leader knows what he is doing and has an established track record of doing what he is supposed to do.

Leadership is all about taking decisions - something MMS could not do .

And since when did MMS' statements actually matter? All of us knew that we were reading pre-recorded script and that he was not going tell us anything new anyways.

MMS' criticism was that he had no locus standi.
