Modi may announce huge economic package for Nepal during his trip

KATHMANDU: India is expected to announce a major economic assistance package for Nepal during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's proposed visit to the country.

India's ambassador to Nepal Ranjit Rae on Saturday met Nepal's finance minister Ram Sharan Mahat when the matters related to the visit were discussed.

"India is likely to announce a huge economic package during the proposed visit of Modi," ambassador Rae was quoted as saying in a statement issued by Nepal's finance ministry.

During the meeting Mahat sought increased assistance from India in the development of hydropower projects, Kathmandu-Terai fast-track road, postal highway, Mahakali bridge and a cricket academy, said the statement. Ambassador Rae sought pre-information about the assistance Nepal is seeking from India, it added.

The dates for Modi's proposed visit are yet to be announced, but media reports here said he was likely to visit Nepal in early August.

The finance ministry said Indian companies were willing to sign power development agreements with Nepal to generate hydropower.

Indian companies such as GMR Consortium and Sutlej Jalavidyut Nigam are ready to move forward once the agreement is signed, it said.

GMR is developing the 900MW Upper Karnali hydro power project and 600MW Upper Marsyangdi-2 project, while Sutlej is developing Arun Third with a capacity of 900MW.

Meanwhile, India's external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj is scheduled to arrive in Kathmandu on a three-day visit to prepare ground for Prime Minister Modi's visit.

Swaraj's Nepal trip would be her maiden visit after assuming the office. She will lead the Indian delegation at the Third Nepal-India Joint Commission meeting to be held on July 26-27 in Kathmandu.


Established in 1987 the joint commission is a bilateral mechanism to oversee the entire gamut of Nepal-India relations and provide directives on measures to further strengthen these relations.

During the visit Swaraj will call on President Ram Baran Yadav, Prime Minister Sushil Koirala, chairman of the constituent assembly and will also meet political leaders including the leader of the opposition in the parliament.

lol... actually we are retiring many squadron of mig 27 and mig 25... we can place it there... or we can buy mig 29 and place it there .... tgey aren't that costly... + it will only help us to keep in check china from tibet...

The Mig 25s were used for reconnaissance and were retired because we now have drones and satellites. Mig 27s are ground attack air craft which are already outdated and need urgent replacements.

Your thoughts imply that you believe that we swim in money that we can "just" buy some Mig 29s and post them in Nepal..... do you even know how much the planes alone would cost?

Do you know that jet pilots are crucial and very expensive assets?

Ever though about the immense costs of setting up a proper infrastructure, ground staff etc etc which is necessary to operate a sqdr. of fighters?

GoI has been making all the right moves with the neighbourhood countries so far. SL, Bhutan, now Nepal.

Hope they begin engaging with BD and Afghanistan too in a big way soon. We should ensure maximum influence
over the SAARC countries as possible. The moves to build a new SAARC headquarters in New Delhi and a dedicated
satellite (or series of sats) for meeting the requirements of friendly SAARC countries are two visionary moves that have
been made by the new GoI since the small time it has been since they assumed power.

Yeah...India is still some way off before deploying major military formations in neighbourhood countries. Although we
already have one airbase in Tajikistan where MiG-29s and C-17s are going to and from.

1st thing yes mig25 and mig27 are retitred and old... but are still credible planes.... and can be used in war like scenarios....
we are developing our airfields in arunachal and kashmir , so we can do it there too, no big deal... and if we open a one or two airstrips there it won't gonna cost trillions... it will be our strategic base to counter china... we have a base in tajikistan too.... do u know that...hw much money we are wasting there....
security of our land depends on security of nepal... nepal is a buffer state with pro indian mindset... we need to utilize it properly to counter china...
we waste more money on other idiotic stuff which can be used here.... i would have said LCA mk2 , but currently dont have that.... so mig 29 is viable option... we can even purchase the old one... it doesn't have to be new...
and yes pilots are very costly resources ... so in case of two front war we need as many trained piolts as possible...

yes kazakhstan was wrong..its tajikistan.....and we have a squadron of mig 29 there...if u dont know...
