MUMBAI: Noted writer Nayantara Sahgal, who returned her Sahitya Akademi award to protest "growing intolerance", a move which prompted many other personalities to follow suit, said that the Modi government may amend the Constitution once it gets a majority in Rajya Sabha.

"The violence is costing them (Government). It's putting them on the defensive now," said the niece of first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

She was speaking at a panel discussion on 'No time for silence: why writers feel the need to speak up', organised as part of the ongoing Tata Literature Live literary festival in Mumbai on Friday evening.

After Ms Sahgal, several other writers and creative personalities returned their respective awards to protest the "growing" tide of intolerance in the country under the present government.

These intellectuals and public figures have alleged the BJP-led government was not acting against right-wing activists who were attacking minorities and secular-minded people.

"They don't have a majority in Rajya Sabha now but will have it in a couple of years. That will enable them to make some moves on amending the Constitution," Ms Sahgal said.

"Indira Gandhi needed two-third majority to amend the Constitution and that's what 1971 (post-Bangladesh war polls) gave her. So in the same way if they (Modi Government) get it, then they can proceed (to amend the Constitution)," she said.

The BJP on its own has comfortable majority in Lok Sabha, but it lacks the same in Rajya Sabha, leading to key Bills getting stuck in the Upper House of Parliament.

Talking to the media after the panel discussion, the 88-year-old litterateur said, "I feel that the Government will proceed to implement its real agenda only after getting a full majority in Rajya Sabha."

"The country is anguished about what is happening to defenceless people who are being gunned down, who are having ink thrown on their faces, who are being brutally threatened," Ms Sehgal had said at a panel discussion on Thursday at the same festival.

I am not in favor of India becoming a Hindu Rashtra. I want it to be secular but a true secular state, not a pseudo one.

I only favor Modi govt because of their current economic agenda, mainly for GST and Land Acquisition Bill kind of policies and nationalistic issues as withdraw of special status for J&K.

I don't support beef ban as it restrict freedom of choice. But the reason why I sometimes support it because muslims oppose it. I think we should make no concession for them in this regard. Why can't a non muslim eat pork in Saudi and other muslim nation?? In their country they make rules according to their religion and forcefully impose on non muslims. And in other nations where muslims are in minority they demand for rights which are not given to them even in islamic nations. Why can't they respect hindu sentiment and accept ban on beef??

Uniform Civil Code !!!!
Religion should stay away from the state .
Either remove religion from constitution or secular .

Our people believe in Fundamental Rights , They don't care about Fundamental Duties

This is not alone the country of Hindus to enforce RSS agendas. To be still clear: This is not a Hindu version of Pakistan that we call as India. 20 crores Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Boudhs and many others live here . They are not going to approve Hindu identity although most of them are Hindu in culture. When ISIS is considered a terrorist organization, why RSS the equivalent of ISIS in every aspect yet intelligent and secretive in execution is still allowed in India? Hindutva radicals cannot see the dust that covers their eyes due to the hatred for Muslims and Christians. That I know.

If India has to be truly secular, we need Uniform civil code with strict penalties for people who do not follow it. This fake pseudo secularism of CONg, RJD, BSP, SP, TMC and its likes will never bring anything for anyone. These parties under the name of secularism will keep dividing India. Unfortunately all these writers / artists and others are rising against central government when the blame is clearly on state govts.
