Indian business leaders and military industry-watchers welcomed the government’s plan to invest in domestic defence, saying the effort would both improve national security and strengthen the economy.

This follows the announcement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 10th Aero India Show in Bangalore last month that India would seek to reduce its 60% of defence imports, also saving billions of dollars.

With an effective strategy that attracts domestic and international investors, India’s military industry will become the heart of the “Make in India” programmeand create thousands of new jobs, Modi said at the event.

“A strong Indian defence industry will not only make India more secure. It will also make India more prosperous,” said Modi. “We have the reputation as the largest importer of defence equipment in the world … this is one area where we would not like to be number one.”

Military analyst Mohammed Ahmedullah said India was in dire need of a strong defence industry and making it so should be the government’s priority.

“India will gain self-reliance by manufacturing defence equipment, armed forces are desperately looking for indigenous machinery, weapons and aircrafts as they do not want to be dependent on any other nation, particularly at the time of direct threat from the enemy,” Ahmedullah told Khabar South Asia.

Prime Minister Modi disclosed at the Bangalore event that even with a 20% to 25% reduction in imports, India could create 120,000 new domestic high-skilled jobs.

“There will be a clear preference for equipment manufactured in India,” he said, adding the goal was to increase domestic procurement in the sector from 40% to 70% in the next five years.

Rohit Mahajan, chief executive officer of HP Patel Group, said the emergence of a strong defence manufacturing industry in India will open additional new export opportunities.

“India should start manufacturing all the [defence] equipment domestically with the help of foreign and local investors which will certainly strengthen the economy,” Mahajan told Khabar. “India would also be able to export the product at attractive prices.”

Ameya Sathaye, editor-in-chief of Diplomacyindia.com, told Khabar that investing in the defence industry would provide new employment opportunities.

If managed properly, the industry will create many more domestic economic opportunities, Mahajan added.

IMHO PM Modi must open up all defense sectors to private players except nuclear missile technology, ABM systems and IRNSS-based communication systems.

Once open, India would become integrated with a massive global supply chain of highly skilled labour delivering quality defence equipment to the Indian military as well as friendly countries around the world.

We must go for 100% FDI in defence and few other sectors where we are completely importing from foreign countries and where we lack technology . Instead we will atleast produce them in India. Will benefit our Make In India initiatives ...

Its the view of many well established defence sectors

100% FDI is already done.

The point is now to rewamp the scientific and engineering education standards in India and remove all reservations so that all the deserving candidates from all backgrounds can equally compete and work for the position. Those who cannot afford education; sponsor their entrance and education fees but DON'T reserve.

Till we keep reserving seats in institutions, government and parliament, India will not progress.

Once we change the education system, the party will then begin for our country.

He is true only 49% FDI in defence . We have great opportunity in defence sectors for 100 % . As no company will be affected except our PsU DRDO and HAL . That too not in at least 40 years :D till then we lol benefit with ToT and modern testing facilities ...

If you followed my comments and threads will find my of my view . For dividing DRDO into several PsU for more accountability and more efficiency . And we need to break this PSU monopoly in defence sectors in a big way .

Government can provide funds for the R&D in defence to many capable private companies too. Like Chinese are doing

Give them time, man.

The country has been a cesspit for 57 years and yet the PM has changed so much in 10 months.

In time things will get clearer and sorted. Trust our PM on this. He is not a politician but a true leader of our country.

In steps brother,

First target was primary education. Second push should go for modernisation of colleges. You create a generation with a knowledge gap, it creates far reaching consequences. You might ending up wasting decades of productivity due to uneven knowledge gathering and lack of reality in education.

The push should be towards infrastructure and teacher training. Which I believe is happening.

The whole b.ed and m.ed programs are undergoing syllabus changes. School teachers get so much training nowadays. Their lives actually are very demanding nowadays. At least in cities.
